  • Dog-friendly site in Castle Douglas, an 18th-century market town
  • Overlooking Carlingwark Loch and five minutes’ drive from Loch Ken
  • A short walk from shops and food venues with quality local produce
Foodies who appreciate a good view just as much as a good dinner will surely want to flock to Lochside Caravan Park. Overlooking Carlingwark Loch, this site is in Castle Douglas, a small 18th-century market town self-appointed as Scotland’s first ‘food town’. Just half an hour’s drive from Dumfries, it’s also easy to reach… The main part of the town is just a five-minute walk away and your ticket to browsing independent shops, eating out and attending local events such as the annual Stewartry Agricultural Show. Castle Douglas is particularly known for its quality local food and drinks, so you should have plenty of energy for trips to Loch Ken (just five minutes’ drive north), Threave Garden (five minutes south) and Threave Castle (10 minutes). There are also several supermarkets, a post office and a petrol station in town, so it’s easy to get practical matters (snacks and such) out of the way. That leaves more time to explore Carlingwark Loch, which is dotted with islands and excellent for boating, learning to sail or picnicking. There is a lochside kids' playground within walking distance. If you’re still looking for extra things to fill your time, there are also swimming pools and tennis courts in Castle Douglas. The A75 runs past the town, providing an easy route out to sights around Dumfries and Galloway including Kirkcudbright 20 minutes’ drive away.

Disliked: Looked like a school playing field in the middle of a housing estate with two tarmac carparks and caravans stuck all over them ... paid for 2 nights and didn't stay ,went somewhere else .

Non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Fabulous location overlooking the loch although the hard standing does look and feel like a car park. There is water, EHU, Elsan, showers and toilets - £30.50 per night for 2 of us. 4 mile walk round the lake. 5 mins walk into Castle Douglas. Surprisingly quiet and peaceful given it’s in a public recreational area, even in a Saturday morning. Really friendly and helpful site manager.

Disliked: Ladies showers not great. Takes 5 minutes to pull the hot water through by which time the shower tray nearly overflows. Water pressure not great either.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: We booked last minute on Saturday 31 August and wasn't disappointed. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who informed us of where the amenities were. The site is a one minute walk into Castle Douglas, I've never seen such a clean litter free town. The on site toilet and showers were spotless.

Disliked: The grass was a little long and we couldn't see the pitch number. After a little help from a friendly neighbour we were soon sorted. This didn't have a negative impact on our stay

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely people

Disliked: Basically a site with people living in the car park.. We didn't any rest or peace as dogs were off lead and coming in our tent in amongst our bbq with owners blaming us, then activities that had been arranged for the public right next to our tenting area. Very different from what we expected
