A spot of rural relaxation, perhaps some scenic rambles… maybe even a little romance? Any – or indeed all – of the above could be on the cards for guests at Willowtree Glamping, a secluded site in the Mourne Mountains just outside the village of Annalong. It’s an adults-only setup here (although dogs are permitted) so peace and quiet should be pretty much guaranteed – along with stunning starry skies overhead in this dark-skies area. The best place to soak up both of those aspects of the site? Quite possibly in the private hot tub outside each of the glamping units – although cuddling up next to the firepit is a most acceptable alternative… Each of the units is kitted out with a kingsize bed, an ensuite bathroom, a barbecue and a kitchen area (with fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and kettle), plus a host of decorative touches like atmospheric mood lighting. With heating and luxury bed linens thrown in too, it’s all so cosy that you may be tempted just to hang out here for your entire break… This would be something of a mistake though, as there are plenty of excellent activities for couples in the surrounding countryside and along the nearby coast. That might be intrepid outings like wild swimming, mountain biking, golf or bouldering – but it could just as easily be chilled-out days strolling through local parkland before hitting the shops in Newcastle or Newry to decide what you’re going to cook on the barbecue that night.

Local attractions

Filling your days with activities shouldn’t be difficult around here. For starters, there are lots of places to get out for a walk around the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and along the Annalong Coastal Path – whether you’re the kind of people who like a challenging hike or an easy stroll punctuated by a picnic. For water babies, there’s the option of paddleboarding on Carlingford Lough from Cranfield beach or Castlewellan Lake (both 20 minutes’ drive) or heading for sea and wild swimming (ask on site for details of some special and slightly secret spots). Coasteering days start from Bloody Bridge (10 minutes) for adventurous pairings, and there’s a lovely seaside golf course for those who’d rather keep their feet on the ground. Other outings might include a stroll around the National Trust’s Derrymore House (45 minutes), a visit to the Seascope Lobster Hatchery (10 minutes) or a pretty wander through the Carginagh Sunflower Fields (10 minutes).
