Hobbit house with outdoor cooking area

  • Flat and grassy five-acre site deep in the Somerset Levels
  • A 15-minute drive from Taunton; Barrington Court 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A378
As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels. Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Premier electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The site was easy find using the What3Words reference, and was easy to access from the M5. That said, it felt very much in the countryside and we loved watching the wildlife that lived in and around the site. The Premium Pitch was perfect for a group: having cooking facilities, hot and cold running water and table/seating made life so much easier and would have been a life-saver if the weather was poor. Also you could shut the gate and keep children contained but still with plenty of room to run around, if you wanted to! The kitchen was remarkably well-equipped, from can/bottle opener and washing up liquid, to pots and pans. Hosts were friendly and helpful but not overbearing.

Disliked: Having a hob was great but cooking for a group on two closely set gas rings was challenging - but no more so than if we had brought our own cooking equipment! There was some road noise from the A road along the edge of the site (even at night, which surprised us), but it really was not intrusive - and that road helps to make the site easy to access. Beware that the mobile phone signal is patchy/poor depending on provider, so definitely don't count on having internet access.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The owners have got the balance just right for me between simplicity and excellent provision of essentials. Features were - meadow in the centre of all of the pitches, simple washing up stations positioned between tent pitches around the field = not far at all to go for drinking water / washing up, friendly owner - easily contactable, but not too much, well spaced good sized pitches and not hundreds of rules written up everywhere. Every pitch had a firepit. The showers were the best camping showers I've ever had - lovely and warm, easy to control. good size and private - enough places to put belongings so they stay dry. The campsite was easy to find. As a solo traveller, I did not once feel vulnerable. Some other campers have reviewed that they did not like a lack of warm water for washing up. I simply boiled a kettle and because the sink was so close to my pitch it was easy to top up the cold washing up water with some hot. Not a problem.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Peace and quiet, friendly and helpful. The stars and setting was stunning, we had electric set up and loved the fact it was quiet and personal as it was well spaced. Also liked the different types of sinks to use on each pitch and the toilet block which was a converted horse box. Will definitely return. 🙏

Disliked: The steps to the showers, it was a horse box so was deep steps up but plenty of handles to help you up and down. Not really for those with limited mobility so take into account if you haven’t got shower facilities in your set up.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: This site is simple and spacious. It has a relaxed and peaceful setting looking towards a lovely wooded hill which does allow you to feel like you are getting away from it all. The site is a single large field that maintains it's long grass and wild flower meadow at its heart. There are simple but well kept facilities and indeed a torch is a must. The managers are friendly and available when needed. Campfires and eclectic washing up facilities add to the camp experience. The sky at night is great as there is little light pollution. The location works well for access to the Somerset levels and Dorset villages. There are some great villages, landmarks, waterways and National Trust houses to explore, good breakfast to be had in Langport, as well as good areas for walking. 1 hour from coast. Very accessible to Taunton, Bridgewater and M5.

Disliked: It's a lovely spot and there is little to dislike. This is not a manicured site but that's the charm of it, along with sitting around the campfire, listening to, and observing the wildlife.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The setting, which is excellent. It is peaceful, surrounded by nature, with woodlands around. Clean toilet block. Clean shower block with hot water. Good set up for kitchen for each pitch. Electric hook up for those who need it. Fire pit with supply of wood, kindling and marsh mallows from the friendly hosts. What's not to like? The hosts are accommodating, allowing us to pitch our tent earlier that expected so we could attend the first session of a conference nearby. We stayed so we could attend the conference. Will be back for a purely social stay soon. It is 15 minutes from Taunton, but in a peaceful setting that feels miles away. No evening entertainment or groups so peaceful......but if you want to visit as a group, you can book the whole site.... Great to be able to sit and listen to nature,,,,birds at dawn, crickets etc.....

Disliked: Sensor lighting for the toilet block at night would have been welcome.....but we understand the potential issue of mosquitoes etc.

Local attractions

First time in the West Country? Get your bearings at the Museum of Somerset (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly local history exhibit housed in the grand surrounds of Taunton Castle. Other history-infused haunts, like National Trust-managed Barrington Court (20 minutes) and Coleridge's Cottage (40 minutes), are also pretty sure to help you get a feel for the place. Already a maven in all things southwestern? Skip the history lesson and get straight out for rambles in the Quantock Hills (20 minutes). The coast is also within range, whether you opt to head north to the Bristol Channel for swims at Kilve beach (40 minutes) or a trip to Watchet arcade (40 minutes) or south to Lyme Regis (45 minutes) on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. If you're looking to branch out from your common and garden holiday attractions, take a closer look at the traditional willow products on display at Coates English Willow Visitor Centre (10 minutes). More local produce can be inspected (and tasted) at promisingly named Sheppy's House of Cider (15 minutes), a well-established Somerset firm where you can analyse dry, medium and sweet varieties.
