  • Spacious back to basics site in the Mendip Hills
  • A quarter of an hour's drive from Cheddar; Wells 20 minutes
  • Pick your own pitch; buy logs on site for a firepit
Hillcroft Farm is a spacious rural campsite in a scenic setting with far-reaching views over the Mendip Hills and handy access from the B3134. Located in the countryside of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near the hamlet of Nordrach, this site is great for the energetic and those who appreciate hiking, as well as fans of horseback riding, fishing, swimming, climbing and sailing, all of which are on offer in the surrounding area. Alternatively, of course, you may just prefer to kick back in these laidback surroundings and soak up the views, venturing out from time to time to lounge on the beaches at Weston-super-Mare (30 minutes' drive) and Burnham-on-Sea (35 minutes). Hillcroft Farm has a composting toilet block as part of its eco-friendly efforts, along with showers. Coming here also means that you can borrow a firepit (subject to availability) and set it up by your pitch, using only logs purchased on site. The local area has further amenities, and an independent pop-up coffee stand is on hand two minutes' walk down the road for coffee and cake between Monday and Friday (7.30am to 11.30am). Just a little bit further away in Blagdon (five minutes), there's a handy shop, post office and three different pubs to explore.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The owner was very friendly and helpful. Lovely views over the cow field. Campfires allowed, firepits were provided and we were allowed to move them where we wanted. We could pitch anywhere we liked, it was very relaxed.

Disliked: Dishwashing area had no hot water, no sink or cover, all dirty dishwashing water had to go straight into the ground and I had to balance everything in the washing up bowl due to lack of surface to put things on next to the tap. Luckily it didn't rain! The campsite is right next to a relatively busy road so our hike started along this road before we reached a footpath. Cars could be heard late into the evening, though not super loud.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. This is a pop up camp site and we provide a table next to the tap with a bowl, washing up liquid and dish cloths, there is a waste disposal container for the dirty water.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Plenty of space to pitch up so no-one was right next to us. Great facilities and a beautiful view. It was lovely to just be off grid for a night in the peace and quiet. The lady who came round to collect the money was friendly and accommodating.

Disliked: Can honestly say there was nothing to dislike.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Good location close to Bristol and Bath. Lovely views and close to animals (very friendly sheep on site). Toilets were great and the shower was excellent.

Disliked: Water tap pressure was great, bit too good as it produced a jet when operated with the foot pedal, got a bit wet.
