  • Rural, family-run site with fantastic views of the Piddle Valley
  • A 10-minute drive to Monkey World; 20 minutes to Lulworth Cove
  • Pick your own pitch on arrival; 500 metres from the river Piddle
Throw yourself into Dorset days out with a trip to Throop Hollow Farm, a park where families and couples can paddle in the river Piddle (a 500-metre stroll away) when not exploring the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site (20 minutes’ drive). Poetic-sounding pursuits aside, this is a fab family-run place with a laidback pick-your-own-pitch setup and memorable views over the Piddle Valley. The low light pollution means stonking vistas of starry skies are also to be seen at night while you cuddle up around a raised campfire (wood is available on base – just make sure the blaze is attended by an adult at all times). If it sounds like the site is peaceful, that’s because it most certainly is – in fact, it’s a spacious and serene sort of place surrounded by wildlife-filled woods and walkways along the River Piddle. For eats and essentials, a local shop is within strolling distance in Briantspuddle village (20 minutes’ amble) and the park’s owners are always keen to recommend guests their fave pubs in neighbouring villages. If you fancy forays further afield, Dorset destinations like the well-known Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door beaches, plus the county town of Dorchester, are within 20 minutes’ drive; closer to home, the excellent Monkey World and Tank Museum are less than 10 minutes away. Amenities back on site include well-kept loos, hot showers and water in a few fancy trailers. Parking is next to each pitch, so there’ll be no need to lug the luggage far.

Local attractions

The park’s rural but well-placed location means it’s a brill base for navigating your way around the Dorset countryside and its stunning 95-mile Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Kick off explores inland in Dorchester (20 minutes’ drive), the county’s main market town, which has a history dating back to the Iron Age and a host of excellent places to eat. Down by the seaside, Weymouth (half an hour) is another spot with an abundance of things to see and do – head here for a stretch of sand lined in Georgian houses, the revolving Jurassic Skyline viewing tower and the panoramas from the Victorian-era Nothe Fort. For more beaches, bound over to Studland and Shell Bay or swing by the seaside resort of Swanage (half an hour) before jumping on a ferry to the buff Brownsea Island just off shore. You could also make tracks to Corfe Castle on a heritage steam railway from Swanage, ending up at a sweet village and some spectacular 11th-century ruins.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The owners of this farm are such lovely people and it shows in the way they are with those staying at the farm.
The bank holiday entertainment was excellent and so was the children’s entertainer on the Sunday. Food and drink on site were at very reasonable prices as is the firewood for the fire pits.

Disliked: Only a very very minor thing but wish the showers were a little larger and had hooks on the walls for your clothes.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The family run farm is a working farm with this event happening once a year. I love how the whole family gets involved- even partying with the guests. Loved the bands, the bar, tractor rides and hay bale fun for the kids. The fire pits and daily log deliveries were fabulous. The logs smelt so amazing! It worked for everyone!

Disliked: Could have had a few more loos and the showers were basic.

Liked: We loved our second stay at Throop Hollow Farm!! Great site in a lovely location…overlooking the rolling hills!! Owner is very friendly. Entertainment/live bands at the weekend, on-site bar, toilets and showers. Campfires and wood available. Highlight for the kids included the farm animals, hay bales and tunnel as well as the daily tractor rides. Will definitely be returning:-)

Disliked: Could maybe do with a few more ladies toilets.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loved the big open space, the hay bale playground was a hit with the kids. Covered communal area and bar were great. Live music was fun.

Disliked: Very small number of toilets for such a big site. Only 4 cubicles for women and as it was a busy and wet weekend these got very mucky quickly. Shower was lovely and hot but was more of a spray gun and everything got a soaking... Luckily I hadn't brought my shoes inside!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Really friendly staff….
Plenty of space.
Live music. Those that complain on here (which I read before camping) should just pitch away from the barns. the farm is plenty big enough. We pitched close and even then the music isn’t horrendous. It got me to sleep! It’s not loud from the tents.
Free Tea/coffee (first time I’ve experienced this when camping!)
Food van on site reasonable prices
Licensed bar great….
Slush puppies & my whippy ice creams (£2) delicious.
Hay bales climbing frame was occupied by kids from 7am till 10pm. Kids had an absolute BLAST on this. Happy kids = happy parents!
Tractor rides also a great idea!!

It really was top drawer and I would recommend this place to everyone I know (I already have)

Disliked: No local walks advertised. I expected to see some suggested walks in the useful info board. Other camp sites do, could be a nice touch.
No hot water to wash up, cold only. Again comparing other campsites have hot water. It’s difficult to clean greased pans. Boiling ur own water to wash up is a bit of a faff.
Recycling not promoted. Separate bins… Could be an easy quick win?
Toilet cleanliness not brilliant, there token air freshener but really stinks bad of urine. I could cope as it’s camping after all!!
Lots of wasps…. Could just be this year is bad, may he nothing to do with the site. Again guess that’s just country life. Not a deal breaker.

I did ask one staff member if I could swap a few damp logs for dry Logs as I was struggling to light them. He wanted my to buy more and was like “it’s tough”. I thought it was a bit harsh. All staff were great, I think this was one rogue bad apple.
