  • Spacious 10-acre campsite in the small Dorset village of Burton
  • Christchurch Harbour and Avon beach 10 minutes' drive away
  • Hire firepits on site; within walking distance of a pub
Whether you’re exploring down the local footpaths that crisscross the countryside or tracking down ponies and canoeing ventures in the New Forest National Park, a stay at Summers Camping by Pitching It will help you tune into your adventurous side. This spacious site is spread over 10 acres of Dorset countryside, with many corners left over to nature. That means you can expect to see wildflowers and birds around the place and find lots of opportunities to get out and explore more. This pop-up site is in the small village of Burton, a 10-minute drive from England’s south coast and the New Forest National Park. Summers Camping by Pitching It is an off-grid site so you should get dark skies at night, but LED fairy lights create laidback festival-style vibes (as well as making a great backdrop for your holiday selfies). Acoustic entertainment is also occasionally on the agenda. It’s safe to say that this friendly site also has good amenities including hot showers, toilets and an occasional pop-up bar. To cook for yourself, hire a firepit and get grilling (logs and firewood are also sold on site). As for the location, well, things are indeed convenient. The site is under a mile from two pubs, a post office and a convenience store, and there’s a pick-your-own farm shop and bakery five minutes’ drive away. Nearby seaside spots like Avon beach and Highcliffe Castle can be reached in about 10 minutes, while the stunning South West Coast Path starts about 10 miles west in Poole (30 minutes’ drive).

Bell tent (basic)

Liked: We hired a Bell Tent which suggested it slept 4 - it was huge & could easily accommodate more people. Good location with lots of shops/pubs just a short drive or walk away. Compost Toilets, although very simple, worked well.

Disliked: There was no one to keep an eye on the site. When we got there, we phoned a mobile number to ask which Bell tent was ours & was told to just chose one. We had no idea which were occupied or not, so had to open and look inside to see if other people's items were in there or not. This was uncomfortable to do & we wouldn't have been happy other's doing that to us. When we found an empty one, although it was lovely and big, it was rather dirty inside (signs of dried liquid on the floor & lots of dirt/sand/stones), so it seemed unlikely they were checked and cleaned between people using them. Sadly, even though we were camped in an area which was signposted for 'families' to use, there was a group that parked up next to us, who kept increasing in multiple cars and were very loud with music playing and talking loudly late into the evening. Our 9 year old couldn't sleep because of this and after he was in tears, we decided to pack up and leave in the middle of the night, which wasn't ideal.

Bell tent (basic)

Liked: I loved the park with some very friendly neighbours, and loved staying in the tee pee, beats a tent any day 😊

Disliked: My only complaint is I didn’t get one bit of sleep. There was a group of older adults with young kids, who were very loud till 3am. My whole family was kept awake which I know is no fault of the park, but was a little let down.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Booking was really easy. Great communication about check in and when we arrived came over to say hello and ask if we needed to know anything about the local area. The campsite is a pop up and so it was basic but as described. The toilets were compost toilets using sawdust, eco friendly and still practical and useable. Thank you we had a lovely stay.

Disliked: There is a small amount of outdoor noise like train and some distant cars So if you like it really quiet take some earplugs.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: It was a spacious site, the shower was warm everytime we used it, there was plenty of toilet roll with toilets being kept clean. It was a good location with pubs in walking distance and supermarkets a short drive from the site.

Disliked: Some additional signage when arriving at the site would be helpful as it’s a small entrance and easily missed.

Those of you who are keen on all the adventurous sort of stuff will spend your time wisely at Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre (15 minutes), which runs skiing, snowboarding and ringo rides.
