  • Peaceful, basic farm site six kilometres from the Jurassic coast
  • A 10-minute drive to the nearest beach; half an hour from Lyme Regis
  • Farm garden café open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; pub nearby
Looking to the Jurassic coast for clifftop trails? Fossil-hunting and a walk down The Cobb harbour in Lyme Regis? Fish and chips from a seaside kiosk alongside one of the bays? The back to basics site Church Farm is well-positioned for digging into the Jurassic coast (quite literally, if you count sandcastle building or fossil-hunting), as it's just half an hour's drive from Lyme Regis. Life is rather peaceful on this small, basic farm site in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The local fishing village of West Bay is 10 minutes’ drive away, so ready your tastebuds for fresh fish caught on a fishing trip or local produce from the twice-weekly market. Nicely, the beaches down in the town are family-friendly with shallow water for paddling. The beach area has all the makings of a good trip, including ice cream kiosks, rowing boats to hire for a paddle down the river Brit or RIB charters to go out to sea. Foodies won’t have too far to look if they time their visit right, as there’s a garden café on the farm open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. When it’s closed, there’s a food shop half an hour’s walk away, plus a fair few restaurants and cafés. If you need to rinse off sand or salt from the day, there’s a handy, simple amenities block on site. Perhaps shower off before ending the day with a leisurely stroll down one of the footpaths around the site, calling into the local pub (10 minutes’ walk away) on your route, of course.

Local attractions

From boating around the lagoon, hiring out a beach hut or looking over the heritage fossil displays, Charmouth beach (half an hour’s drive) is another bay within reach. There’s much to do at Lyme Regis (half an hour) too, from visiting a fossil museum to rummaging through rockpools or browsing art galleries around the town. While the Jurassic coast is known for its clifftops and beaches, there’s more than that around. There are nesting mute swans that reside over at Abbotsbury Swannery (half an hour). Pair your trip with a ticket into the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens (20 minutes) to check out the exotic plants. Forde Abbey House and Gardens (35 minutes) is another spot inland, with entertainment in the form of a plant nursery, outdoor theatre and the Asian woodlands and prairie garden. Or, how about a critique of the local ales? There are brewery tours and tastings around the thatched Palmers Brewery (five minutes) in Bridport nearby the site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The views were wonderful, trees, fields sunset and horses! We liked being able to pick our own pitch and the walk to the nearest pub was short. The owners came round to see us which is nice (however, they didn't seem to know whether we were arriving or just leaving!) It is a quiet, peaceful place. A few things to address below and this would have been idyllic.

Disliked: It is a sloping field, it doesn't matter what anyone says. Very hard to find a flat area but flat enough in one or two spots. To get the views, we had to face away from the camp site. The electric fence is not properly signed. I believe every 'pitch' should have a sign visible from one sign to the next at least. Managed to touch it and this needs addressing for children's sake. Yes it is advertised as a 'basic' site so wasn't expecting much. However, my wife reported that the ladies was dirty and throughout our stay. We are seasoned campers and know the difference between 'basic' and 'dirty'. It says there is a 'cafe' on site on certain days. Well it is in fact a van that was not open on the Saturday as advertised but was at the local car boot sale instead. The road up to the site is dark and VERY narrow.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Beautiful setting with amazing views. Lots of footpaths to explore direct from the site. A friendly welcome from the owners, despite the dreadful weather on my arrival. Facilities were basic but perfectly adequate. I definitely didn’t see the site at its best because of the weather, but it’s a lovely spot and I would stay here again.

Liked: It was a nice site. Owners come Round and introduce themselves. Pitches not on top of each other so plenty of room.

Disliked: Shower and toilets could do with updating and a good clean.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We loved the farm setting - we weren’t on top of the animals but they were around to be involved in. Clean showers and toilet facilities and friendly hosts who went above and beyond.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Good location for countryside walks but also close to the coast. We walked to Bridport. Decent hot showers. Very good local pub in the village. The owners were friendly.

Disliked: The field is not as big as it looks on Pitchup so the tents/campervans were quite close together when the site was full at the weekend. The toilet cubicles were a bit on the small side. There wasn’t hot water for washing dishes which was a minor disappointment. The toilet block could do with a bit of a spruce up but all in all the site is fine.

From the manager: Glad you enjoyed your stay obviously weekends are the busiest times to visit but as stated we're a small basic campsite accommodating just 14 pitches but with the benefits of being close to the coast and local amenities. We have heard the cubicles are slightly small on other reviews but unsure how this is a problem or a dislike just to use the facilities briefly. Obviously sprucing up the facilities is done each year as one shower has had a complete refurb this April but as a small farm site we do have to budget this all in and to keep pitch prices down we can only do so much each season. Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: No frills, quiet campsite, easy to check in and pay, could choose own camping spot. Exactly what we wanted for a couple of nights.

Disliked: Field is on a slope. Toilets and showers have seen better days but were clean and functional.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We appreciate the feedback, our camping ground is on a slight slope but there are areas that are flatter and as you said you were able to pick your own pitch space so could have moved if you felt the slight gradient was not to your liking. As advertised, we are a basic campsite, we pride ourselves on being a small, quiet site which allows our visitors to enjoy the countryside more without being cramped next to other visitors. Our toilet and shower facilities are adequate for what they are used for, they are cleaned and checked daily and we provide sanitary products in the ladies as well as toilet rolls, hand sanitiser and liquid soap. For basic facilities these meet the standards require. We are a no thrills site and as such we are able to keep our prices reasonable for an affordable get away along the Jurassic coastline.
