  • Welcoming site on an alpaca farm in south Devon
  • Totnes five minutes’ drive; Dartmoor and South Hams beaches 20 minutes
  • Alpaca treks; five minutes’ walk to the pub
If you’ve always longed to get close to alpacas, here’s your chance. The animals at Gatcombe Park Farm Glamping, in the South Hams village of Littlehempston, are as friendly as they come, and most of them will come and say hello. If you really want to get to know them, you can book an alpaca trek on arrival. The adults-only accommodation options at Gatcombe Park Farm Glamping are a short walk away from a landscaped pond, where you're welcome to chill out with a drink and watch the alpacas grazing peacefully in neighbouring paddocks. The site is located in a pretty village location, within five minutes’ walking distance of two pubs (one in the village and the other a little further away through the lanes and woodland), while Totnes (five minutes’ drive) has a choice of cafés, pubs and restaurants as well as all the shops you need to keep stocked up on essential supplies.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: We stay for one night as we had a wedding nearby, and wish we could have stayed longer. Absolutely beautiful camp site! Everything there you need and super peaceful! We will definitely be booking again. The highlight was sat on the swinging chair listening to the waterfall with the morning sun shining on me! The toilet was always clean and the shower too. The shower was also lovely and warm with great lighting!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice enough, and good location, friendly owners…

Disliked: …however, I felt that having to buy a £6 membership to even book in, then £25 for first night, and additional £27 to extend by one extra night (more if I’d have done bank transfer)…totalling £58 for me as a solo traveller in a one-man pop-up tent for two nights was VERY pricey for a campsite with no frills.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback; it's quite a contrast from our previous reviews! We appreciate hearing your perspective. We strive to offer a unique and enjoyable experience at our small campsite, which is part of Natural England. The £6 membership fee is an essential contribution that helps the club's conservation efforts, like our 'Trees for Life' scheme, whereby a tree is planted for every membership enrollment and helps maintain the serene atmosphere our campers enjoy, including the special experience of camping next to our alpacas. We aim to be transparent with our pricing, which is detailed in our listing, and there are other sites locally. Our rates reflect not only the beautiful location and friendly environment but also the amenities we provide, such as our luxury bathroom and kitchen area. Many guests find these facilities add significant value to their stay. We're sorry to hear that the costs didn't meet your expectations, especially during your solo visit in a one-man pop-up tent. We believe our pricing is competitive considering the experience and services we offer, and I wonder why you booked if you felt that £56 for a two-night stay in the middle of the summer holiday was too expensive for you. We understand that everyone has different budgetary expectations when it comes to travel and strive to offer a unique, valuable experience through our beautiful location, amenities, and contributions to conservation efforts. Nonetheless, we appreciate your input and will take it into consideration as we continue to enhance our offerings. Thank you again for visiting, and we hope you find the perfect camping spot for your future travels within your budget.

Liked: We recently had the pleasure of staying at Gatcombe and it exceeded all of our expectations! From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the stunning scenery and the peaceful ambiance of the location. The tipi we stayed in was beautifully furnished, offering the perfect balance between rustic charm and modern comfort. The bed was incredibly cosy, and the interior was thoughtfully decorated with warm, earthy tones that made us feel right at home. One of the highlights of our stay was, of course, the alpacas! These gentle and friendly creatures added such a special touch to the experience. It was a delight to wake up each morning and see them grazing nearby. In addition, the hosts were wonderful. The amenities on-site were excellent, with a clean and well-maintained bathroom area just a short walk from the tipi. There was also a fire pit where we enjoyed roasting marshmallows under the stars, creating a truly magical evening. The location itself is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s nestled in a serene, natural setting, yet still close enough to nearby towns if you want to explore the area. We loved the balance of seclusion and accessibility. Overall, our stay at Gatcombe was nothing short of perfect. It’s an ideal retreat for anyone looking to unwind in nature, enjoy the company of some adorable alpacas, and experience the charm of glamping. We can’t wait to return!

Liked: Lovely campsite. Very easy and relaxed and would recommend. We liked the kitchen area with kettle/toaster and guide books, etc. Easy to find and there is a footpath to Totnes and to the local village - we ate out every night

Liked: The quietness of the site. A sanctuary of peace away from noisy children. A haven of tranquility and calmness. I liked the small freehold homestead set up, akin to a post-apocalyptic bug out for preppers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Really nice site! Facilities were excellent - clean showers and a little kitchen with a kettle and washing-up facilities. It was very accessible for us as backpackers without a car, as the no. 7 bus runs hourly from Totnes to a bus stop just up the road (NB it only runs twice a day on Sundays). It's also walkable from Totnes if you don't mind hills. Very quiet and chill even though the site's close to a main road. We got the additional extras of a fire pit and some eggs, which was worth doing. The neighbouring alpacas, chickens and ducks were fun. Seemed a shame that the site couldn't accommodate children as it'd be a great space for them!

Disliked: Please could you put some information on the location description about how to get to the site by public transport? We walked down the busy main road to get from the bus stop to the campsite and only found out when we arrived that there was a much quieter route around the back of the fields.

Local attractions

Once you’ve managed to drag yourselves away from the alpacas, get the walking shoes on and explore the many footpaths accessed from site. For more serious yomps across moorland to rocky tors, head to Dartmoor National Park (20 minutes’ drive to Buckfastleigh), where you can also spot wild ponies roaming free. Alternatively, turn east to the Devon coast. Paignton (20 minutes) has a sandy beach, a promenade and traditional pier, and if you’re after something more secluded, St Mary’s Bay is an often-almost deserted cove reached by steps down the cliffside. From there, you can walk to the landmark Berry Head Lighthouse in Berry Head National Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ walk). The high street in historic Totnes (five minutes’ drive) is full of small independent shops and art galleries, but the town is at its liveliest on Friday and Sunday, when street markets offer local foods and ciders, artisan crafts and antiques. Dartmouth (half an hour) has a lively waterfront and watersports along the River Dart, and sailing-mad Salcombe (40 minutes) has spectacular views of the Kingsbridge estuary. Brixham (25 minutes) is known for its lively fishing harbour and choice of seafood restaurants.
