  • Quiet and simple Devon site with resident kestrels and owls
  • Half an hour's drive from beaches and South West Coast Path
  • Fishing lakes and alpaca walks within a five-minute drive
Hang out with your feathered friends on this fab site in Devon. Stonechat Meadow is well named: a wide, quiet and supremely green spot that's visited not just by the little orange-breasted flay-catching birds but by kestrels, skylarks, brown owls and tawny owls. Deer, foxes and rabbits also wander through this simple, family-run site that's set up to give visitors what they need without getting in the way of the outdoors and the Devon wildlife. Bring your binoculars, barbecue your bangers under star-filled night skies (little light pollution here) and settle in for a stay in deep countryside. Deep as it is, you'll be pleased to find yourself 10 minutes' drive from pubs with grub and shops in Winkleigh and half an hour from the amenities and attractions of bigger towns like Bideford and Barnstaple. It's good news for anglers here too: Stonechat Meadow is five minutes' drive from Stafford Moor's 35 acres of lakes filled with carp, perch, bream and tench. Walkers will find plenty to keep them busy: the Tarka Trail's 32 miles of river banks and wooded valleys start 15 minutes' drive away in Meeth, on trails clearly marked for hikers and bikers.

Barn Owl non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The scenery

Disliked: Very basic facilities. Only cold water at the wash basin in the 2 toilets. Only one basic shower no heating in a basic shed with gaps. The frdide and bins and so say washing up area was locked and we were not allowed to use. As he had little gas. So had to wash and clean at the tent. Owner not friendly or approachable. Will not be going back.

Liked: The nature reserve feeling of the site and which we had to ourselves. The views of the night sky. Rose and Mike were friendly and helpful and the T Barn was a well equipped refuge.

Barn Owl non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Mike & Rose are lovely hosts. We had the site to ourselves so the peace and quiet was lovely. Not many pitches so can't imagine it gets noisy. The toilets are kept clean and the shower is great. The freezer has a good supply of bacon and chicken. Only there for a short stay but the evening spent gawping at the milky way was a real treat.

Disliked: Other sites we looked at in the area were pretty well booked up and a little cheaper, so perhaps the pitch your own price is not very competitive. Didn't put us off and no regrets.

Local attractions

If you fancy a more mammoth yomp, the Tarka Trail links up with the Devon Coast to Coast route between Ilfracombe (an hour's drive away) and Plymouth, while the wildlife and views of the 630-mile South West Coast Path can be yours in whole or in easier sections by heading to the sea at Westward Ho! (40 minutes). The beach there is popular with surfers and Bude (an hour) can satisfy just about every craving for sea-based watersports. You can hone your skills inland too at the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Bideford (half an hour), where surfing and kayaking are on offer alongside laser tag, a Nerf arena and an assault course. Bideford and Ilfracombe are busy with boat traffic in the summer months, taking day trippers out to the wild solace of Lundy Island with its seal colonies, wild deer and goats and long, quiet walking trails; book a return at sunset if you can for maximum romance/photo opps. To get a little closer to the wildlife, drive a minute from the site to go walking the local hills in the company of a friendly alpaca herd. The Big Sheep at Bideford also has many pettable pals in its animal barn (alongside a rollercoaster and microbrewery), while lions and wolves, wallabies and meerkats mingle with animatronic and somewhat older lifeforms an hour away at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park.
