  • Quiet, family-run glamping site on a working dairy farm in north Devon
  • Private shower, toilet and cooking facilities for each bell tent
  • Three miles from Ilfracombe and a 10-minute drive to Woolacombe
North Devon, a farm, and luxury bell tents in a wildlife haven close to the coast… if these tick your holiday boxes (as well they should), you might want to check out Cheglinch Farm Glamping. Half a mile from the village of West Down and three miles from Ilfracombe, Cheglinch is on a sheltered field on a secluded and family-run dairy farm, with loads of room to run around and plenty of wildlife to spot. Deer, owls and a family of pheasants all visit here, as well as birds and insects of all sorts attracted to the four-acre field's small pockets of marshland. Each tent comes with a firepit outside so you can sizzle supper against a backdrop of the Devon sunset – perhaps while the kids tear around the huge field or get acquainted with the indoor and outdoor play areas. Kids are also welcome to meet the farm's family of guinea pigs, collect eggs, watch calves being fed and see the herd of cows grazing within the hamlet… (it's highly likely they'll like the cow-themed duvet covers in the bell tents too). Indoors, proper and comfy beds are made up for your arrival, there's a woodburning stove just outside your tent for cosy nights and cooking, with tea lights and fairy lights placed and strung all around. The farm also has a play barn with games and activities for kids, a dining table for each tent, and fridge, freezer, microwave and laundry facilities. There's electricity up here too, so you can charge your phone and other gadgets if you really can't face a digital detox. West Down, a short stroll away, has a friendly village pub, a play area and a community shop selling local produce.

Lotus bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked This was a great long weekend away in a great glamping tent. It was spacious and well equipped and each tent had their own eco toilet, kitchen area with BBQ and a shower room outside across the field. Each tent also had their own chicken pen to collect eggs from whenever they were laid which was amazing! There was a shared fridge/freezer too. The setting was beautiful and the children loved playing in the fields with the garden activities. Thank you for a great holiday!

Disliked There was some noise at night from farm machinery and the obligatory farm smell but we were prewarned about this and were left earplugs for the night noise in each tent.

Lotus bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked The tents were super comfy and very well equipped, the host was lovely, campsite was beautiful and excellent for the children, so much space to run around, chickens and calves to see, fresh eggs to collect, games and toys, the kitchen facilities were very well equipped we barely needed to bring anything ourselves. Would definitely come back and stay again.

Disliked It was a shame that we were not allowed fire pits due to the national alert (not the hosts fault at all!) but it meant the evenings were quite cold and dark and we couldn’t spend much time whilst the children were asleep chatting / playing games around a fire pit. Water pressure in our tap was very low. Shower temp was too cold for me but I do like them very hot, the other guests were happy with the water temp. The first night the noises from the farm were very loud, lots of machinery could be heard at 2am. Having stayed on a number of different farm glamping sites we noticed the cow manure smell was very strong the first couple of days so perhaps they’d just done muck spreading. But it settled down towards the last day. Definitely the strongest smell of any farm campsite we’ve stayed on. Nothing that spoiled our weekend though just a few minor points.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and really pleased that you enjoyed your stay. So sorry if the shower temperature was a little cold. It is unfortunate that you didn't mention it when you were here as we found a fault with you individual shower after your had left. The problem was easily resolved but it was likely affecting your shower water temperature. Really hope it didn't impact your stay. We recognise that everyone has different shower temperature preferences which is why we detail on the notice in each shower room to just ask as we are always happy to adjust the temperature. We will always do our very best to make everyone's stay as enjoyable as possible.

Lotus bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked Private wash and toileting facilities with stocked amenities.
Own kitchen, with well stocked equipment and basic amenities.
Great outdoor space and play areas for kids of all ages, including animals!
Optional indoor play room which is great for rainy weather plus option to charge electrical.
Fantastic location/ proximity to large shops, beach and rainy day activities. Plenty of local information available to peruse.
Great value for money.
We didn't need to bring anything except clothes as could purchase food for cooking down the road!
Phone signal is working from the Glamping pods. Didn't attempt to use wifi but only available in Indoor games room (with plenty of seating).

Lotus bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked Loved the Yurt/Bell Tent - the beds were super comfy and the children loved the cow bedding. We felt as if having the kitchen and it being fully stocked with utilities made it enjoyable and easy esp with the BBQ provided.
As a family we enjoyed how much was included the wood for the fire and ear plugs by the bed and extra bedding - the umbrella in the toilet (the little things)
The children loved collecting the eggs from the chickens in the morning and seeing the guinea pigs - no cars on site and the children just ran around safe.

Lotus bell tent (private bathroom amenities)

Liked We loved this spot, it had everything we needed with loads of space for our little boy to play. Having our own toilet, cooking and shower made all the difference.

Everything was really well thought through, particularly with young children in mind. It was all very clean and well looked after.

The location was also perfect for getting to plenty of local spots within 10 minutes in the car. We'll definitely be back again.

Disliked The only thing is that it could be a bit noisy being a working farm, but that's very much made clear on the description and there was a pack of earplugs provided in the tent (thought of everything!)

Local attractions

It's a few minutes' drive from the farm to local town Ilfracombe, famed for its Victorian tunnels beaches with rockpools and tidal bathing pools. You can take a trip to Lundy Island from here too, or roam around town for shops, restaurants and shows at the promenade's Landmark Theatre. Within 10 minutes' drive is another famed beach in Woolacombe, regularly hailed as among the best in the land, Europe and worldwide: head here for miles of soft sand, plenty of rockpools, and sloping sand dunes to clamber up. Croyde and Saunton Sands are both about 20 minutes away. For hikes and ponies, drive down to Exmoor, half an hour from the farm.
