Honesty shop and entrance to the camping field

  • Classic farm camping on a hay meadow in the Blackdown Hills, Devon
  • A 20-minute drive to Wildwood Escot Park and Castle Neroche hill fort
  • Homegrown produce in honesty shop; livestock on site and local walks
On the owner’s admission, the farm campsite at Higher Moorlands Farm couldn’t be any more ‘farmy’ if it tried. On a hilltop at the head of Devon’s Otter Valley, this pop-up campsite has all the ‘farmy’ staples: sheep and cattle dot the fields, there are pigs too, and you can buy the farm’s own meat, cider and vegetables from the honesty shop. Campfires are allowed and there are acres of grassy space on the camping meadow – which doubles as a hay field – where children can duck and dive and play games of hide and seek with their canine chums. Despite all the space in the meadow, there’s only a small number of pitches here, ensuring there’s not too much pressure on the environment – or your privacy. All this is on offer, as well as a spectacular backdrop of Hartridge Common in the distance. In some spots, guests may even watch the moon rise over the ridge if the evening is clear enough. Facilities are befitting a farm too. There are a couple of well-kept composting loos, two hot showers, two washing-up stations and a communal freezer in the honesty shop. Otherwise, the real offering here is space and freedom. Buy meat fresh from the farm to cook over the campfire in the evening, or rise early to enjoy the south-easterly views and watch the sunrise over the valley. There are local walks detailed on a big, annotated map pinned to the wall in the shed, and by car it’s around 35 minutes’ drive to Sidmouth, Seaton and Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We have just got back from a stay here and we had the best time. The campsite isn't too big with two fields to choose from. We were able to choose our own spot. As the weather was bad we put our tent close to some hedges along the top of the field which helped protect us from the wind. It is on a slight slope but there is a lovely view from the fields and it is very peaceful. It is a great place to chill out and recharge. The facilities were great for a small campsite. The showers were clean and hot and the compost toilets were clean with plenty of loo roll. There is a place for recycling but we took the rest of our rubbish with us when we went out. The little shop area sells wood and kindling. It has plugs for charging phones and a communal freezer. There is also a wash up area and water tap in the field. Oli was very friendly and introduced himself when we got there. He checked we were ok during our stay and offered advice and places to visit. The location was great, with beaches and woodland walks nearby. There are supermarkets in the town too. The entrance to the campsite isn't too obvious though so keep an eye out on the road. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this campsite for a quiet and peaceful place to camp.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great views, excellent and clean facilities, and the pigs!

Disliked: Not much really, it's close to an airfield so I guess some might find the air traffic (smaller planes only) a little annoying.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Excellent views in a lovely setting. Uncrowded. Basic well maintained facilities though as advertised. Ideal for one night stopover en route to Cornwall.

Disliked: Close to an airfield with the noise from small planes flying overhead continuous until the early evening; rather spoiled the tranquility of an otherwise perfect location.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: If you want total isolation, then this could be the place for you. Nobody else there, when I was there, so it was just me, in a field... Nothing wrong with that, just not what I was after at this point in time, so for me, I didn't really like it and moved on to Dartmoor after one night only. You may well like it, if that's what you want.

From the manager: A 4/10 review! that's pretty bad... but what exactly have we done wrong... we aren't quite sure. Kelvin doesn't seem to understand that by giving us a low rating he might exacerbate exactly the thing that has him so unimpressed: namely that the low rating will put people off coming here thus making us even more quiet! Check out his other reviews to enjoy some more complaints that blame campsite owners for things completely out of their hands - crowing crows! oh dear. Luckily most people come here exactly for the peace and quiet, so in a way Kelvin has done us a favour by highlighting this. lol

Beautiful, peaceful site with stunning views and lovely owners.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Everything! The site when we arrived had some beautiful views, we were able to choose where we pitched our tent from a choice of two spacious fields. The facilities were amazing, showers and toilets kept clean and tidy and there were areas to do washing up too. Would definitely recommend and will be returning to this campsite again!

Don't follow the postcode as it won't take you to the farm. Instead, either follow the Google Maps location or follow the what3words location to the top of the farm track: continues.fellow.wink. The farm track is opposite a wood clad bungalow called 'Bedford Haze' with a yellow flag. The farm name is on a sign at the top of our track. Local attractions

History buffs, there are no less than seven Iron Age hill forts to discover in the surrounding Blackdown Hills, the nearest being Hembury and Dumpdon (both 10 minutes’ drive), while woodland footpaths wind up to the remains of Castle Neroche (20 minutes). And talking of walks, anyone strolling along the River Otter (15 minutes) should look out for… yes, otters certainly, but also keep an eye open for beavers, now thriving along the river banks. But first, don't forget that this site is just a car ride away from the Jurassic Coast. In Seaton (half an hour), unwind on the pebbles after a ride on the tramway. In Charmouth (35 minutes), you might decide to try your luck fossil hunting. Wildwood Escot Park (20 minutes) has plenty on offer for families and animal lovers, where rare wolves, lynx and brown bears live in natural habitats, and where kids can run around on treetop rope courses and lose themselves in the beech-hedge maze. Another fun family day out is to be had on the gentle carousels and go-Karts at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (half an hour). For anyone seeking a little more adrenaline, Dunkeswell Aerodrome offers sky-diving lessons, and there are fast-paced stock-car races at Smeatharpe Stadium (both 10 minutes).
