On the owner’s admission, the farm campsite at Higher Moorlands Farm couldn’t be any more ‘farmy’ if it tried. On a hilltop at the head of Devon’s Otter Valley, this pop-up campsite has all the ‘farmy’ staples: sheep and cattle dot the fields, there are pigs too, and you can buy the farm’s own meat, cider and vegetables from the honesty shop. Campfires are allowed and there are acres of grassy space on the camping meadow – which doubles as a hay field – where children can play. Despite all the space, there’s only a small number of pitches, ensuring there’s not too much pressure on the environment – or your privacy. All this is on offer, as well as a spectacular backdrop of Hartridge Common in the distance. In some spots, guests may even watch the moon rise over the ridge if the evening is clear enough. Facilities are befitting a farm: there are a couple of well-kept composting loos with recycled toilet paper, two hot showers, two washing-up stations (with eco-friendly cleaning products) and a communal freezer at the honesty shop. Otherwise, the real offering here is space, freedom and an inclusive space where everyone is welcome regardless of gender identity, skin colour or background. The owners are a friendly bunch who are keen to help and want you to feel at ease. Buy meat fresh from the farm to cook over the campfire in the evening, or rise early to enjoy the south-easterly views and watch the sunrise over the valley. There are local walks detailed on a big, annotated map pinned to the wall in the shed, and by car it’s around 35 minutes’ drive to Sidmouth, Seaton and Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast.

Liked The site was a nice small space with a couple of fields to choose from. I was lucky as hardly anyone else there, just the way I like it. Lovely view looking across the countryside

Disliked Nothing wrong with the site, not ideal area if you bring your dog.
- Nowhere to walk the dog without needing to drive.
- Sadly some shooting was going on just as I arrived that terrified my dog. He spent the trip hiding under the van.
Not the site owners fault but might be worth a note for future campers in case they have a dog that is fearful of shooting.

Liked The view is absolutely beautiful, and the pitch is a good size. There’s also a water tap available, which is very convenient.

Disliked Since the overall campsite isn’t very large, the pitches are naturally quite close to each other. For example, in the morning we were woken up by children and other campers nearby.
Overall, though, we had a good experience and enjoyed our stay.

Liked Great basic campsite. Simple check in. We were looking for no frills camping and it was great 🤗 lovwky composting toilets that are well built and set up, washing up areas and showers. Owner came and said hello, lovely person with good hints and tips. Beautiful, quiet location!
Open feild with no assigned picthes. It was quiet when we went so it was perfect for us, but if it was busier perhaps wouldnt have been as enjoyable? This is a hypothetical so didnt want to list it in the dislike area as we loved our stay 🥰🥰🥰

Liked The view from the site.is lovely.over.the valley to the patchwork of fields beyond. I liked that there were two separate fields with the same view and both were sheltered by good tall hedges.
The toilets and showers were great and both worked really well.
There was a handy washing up area between the two fields.
I liked that the site is well away from the road so you don't hear any traffic but you do hear bird song and owls at night which is lovely.

Liked Peaceful, enough space, basic but functional facilities.

don't come here if you want entertainment/clubhouse/to let your kids run ferral, Internet, takeaways.

Do come here if you want peace and quiet, a place to rest your head and read your book, to enjoy the view and relax!

Disliked Local roads have massive potholes...campsite tracks in much better condition.

Liked How easy it was to pitch up and find a space with no strict timings of arrival and departure. The space was lovely and easy access to the toilets and showers, the showers were great. There is no running hot water to wash your pots, they do have outdoor sinks to wash up in I just boiled some water.
The View I will miss waking up to and the peace.

Disliked Wouldn't say its a dislike and wouldn't put me off going again but the toilets were a little smelly as they are the compostable ones.

Liked Back to nature feel. No gimmicks, no hassle. Outstanding views of the countryside, quiet and peaceful. 10 minutes to town for shopping. Good mobile signal, plenty of local info on site.Ollie and Eve on call if you need them, very nice people. I'll recommend this to anyone touring the area, but if you're looking for something loud and rowdy, with all the mod cons, go somewhere else, this is how camping should be.

Route directions

Don't follow the postcode as it won't take you to the farm. Instead, either follow the Google Maps location or follow the what3words location to the top of the farm track: continues.fellow.wink. The farm track is opposite a wood clad bungalow called 'Bedford Haze' with a yellow flag. The farm name is on a sign at the top of our track. Drive down the farm track and take the right-hand turn into the car park signposted 'campsite'.

Local attractions

History buffs, there are no less than seven Iron Age hill forts in the surrounding Blackdown Hills, the nearest being Hembury and Dumpdon (both 10 minutes’ drive), while woodland footpaths wind up to the remains of Castle Neroche (20 minutes). And talking of walks, anyone strolling along the River Otter (15 minutes) should look out for… yes, otters certainly, but also beavers, now thriving along the river banks. But first, don't forget that the Jurassic Coast is nearby. In Seaton (half an hour), unwind on the pebbles after a ride on the tramway, and in Charmouth (35 minutes), try your luck at fossil hunting. Wildwood Escot Park (20 minutes) has plenty for families and animal lovers, where rare wolves, lynx and brown bears live in natural habitats and kids can run around on treetop rope courses and the beech-hedge maze. There are also gentle carousels and go-Karts at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (half an hour). For anyone seeking a little more adrenaline, Dunkeswell Aerodrome offers sky-diving lessons, and there are fast-paced stock-car races at Smeatharpe Stadium (both 10 minutes).
