  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm produce and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food
Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed. This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie. Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away. Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…) Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Countryside and nice to have cafe on site. The Otter Amber was v good. The showers were good.

Disliked: The pitches could have been mown shorter, the wet grass and chunks of grass cuttings were messy. Sadly some campers played loud music beyond the 11am curfew.

Liked: Had everything needed on site. Met some lovely people. Hot showers. Food available on site.

Disliked: Chemical disposal area had no water.

From the manager: Good morning. Thank you for taking the time to review your stay here. We enjoyed having such a lovely crowd in for the spring bank holiday, I do wish you could have told us at the time that the water had stopped on the chemical disposal area as the tap and flush should have been working at all times. We had it all emptied and serviced just prior to the weekend but things can break down at times, so apologies for this. It was a lovely busy weekend and whilst the toilets and showers were cleaned a twice daily that area of the site did not get as much attention. We look forward to seeing you back again one day. Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely rustic campsite, toilets & showers were clean & worked well. Staff very friendly & happy to help. Cafe food was lovely, had a beautiful roast on the weekend, followed by an amazing sticky toffee pudding. Everyone on the site was lovely.

Disliked: Pitches are slightly sloped in certain areas but this wasn’t an issue for us. Grass was a little long which with the rain left very wet feet & legs!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Closeness to beaches Views from the campsite

Disliked: The toilets were very very basic. They were clean, but very basic. The campsite was noisy in the evenings - could have been just an unlucky weekend, but music was being played till late and past curfew (given that the curfew is already 11pm!). Someone was allowed to enter the campsite and pitch a tent at midnight, so lots of car door slamming and taking causing a lot of disturbance. Our pitch was on quite a significant hill

From the manager: Hello . It appears our site was not for you.We are sorry you did not enjoy all we had to offer. It was a bank holiday weekend therefore family groups and a party atmosphere including fun laughter and it seems music too. We keep very clean toilets which you kindly commented on but what I am unsure about is you describe them as to your 'quote; very very 'basic' . We have in each toilet cubicle 2x toilet paper dispensers, commercial size, 2 x blue hand paper, a bucket of wet wipes, bins, hand rails, wash basins, liquid soap & hand gel, mirror & light . Also sensor overhead lights. Not forgetting the accessible toilet and shower with baby changing station. .Some have have plugs and razor points. I am at a loss as to what else one comes to expect on a camp site. We don't get the time to be tourists these days but what we offer far exceeds some we have stayed on in the past. Apologies for the late tent pitch. We had no idea of their plans to be here until they came to pay the next day for which I admire their honesty if not their late arrival. Also if people play music past the 11pm and guests find it annoying surely a quick phone call to us at the time is the way forward as we then attend that pitch and put a stop to the noise. From Boveys Down Farm ,family camping site with far reaching views.

Great little site in beautiful countryside. Chilled and relaxed.

From the manager: We do have a very well organised cleaning rota to ensure the 8 toilets .basins .floors and bleached at least twice daily, this also applies to the showers. I personally do the 6am shifts & 10 am shifts over weekends and daily in school holidays. Sadly we didn't see a lot of you but would have enjoyed getting to know you down here on the farm.

Liked: The view was amazing! The location was perfect for us to get about, we visited Sidmouth and Lyme Regis and both were an easy drive away. The owners were amazing and so helpful, we managed to forget our tent pegs and they supplied us with some! So generous and lovely! There was a bar, so we were able to enjoy drinks in the sun, as well as the choice of food. The toilet block was in really good condition and clean! The sound of animals in the morning was just perfect - plus the cat on site was so adorable! Overall we loved our time there and will hopefully be back soon!

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour). Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea. Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
