  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked open field, pitch where appropriate, Showers surprisingly clean and functional.
Very quiet, remote location.

Disliked Portaloos ( but better than no portaloos at all!).
Field slightly rolling, but levelling can be achieved with standard blocks.
Single track road access, problematic for larger MoHo's.

From the manager: Thank you Paul for your review
I am glad you enjoyed the great veiws and the clean facilities and was totally relax on your arrival. There is also a chemical waste on site for those motorhomes
Hope to see your family soon

Liked Great value for money. Warm showers and acceptable toilets (portaloo’s around the wide). Just basic camping

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked It was incredibly peaceful. Virtually no traffic on the nearby lane, it was very quiet and just relaxing. Plenty of space to separate yourself from the other campers. Toilets are portaloo’s, but they were clean and as pleasant as they can be.
No set kick-out time which makes your final day relaxing and stress free.
We didn’t use the showers, but they looked fine from the outside.
The owner was friendly and very much had the mindset of ‘camping should be fun’ so doesn’t have lots of restricting rules.
We will certainly be staying here again!
Phone signal (O2 and Three) exists BUT not at any great speed.

Disliked The only slight negative is that a large amount of the field is on a slope, and we don't (yet) have levelling ramps for our camper. We will be adding them shortly, and that won’t be an issue anymore!

From the manager: Thank you Anthony for your review
I am glad your family had a relaxing
and peaceful time at the Camping field and Try the hot showers next time
Hope to see you all again
Happy camping Richard

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
