  • Luxury bell tents on a small site in the South Downs National Park
  • A five-minute drive from Cissbury Ring and 15 minutes from Worthing
  • Three food pubs within 10 minutes' walk; firepit provided on site
If luxury bell tents and the South Downs National Park sounds like your kind of pairing, you may want to duck down into The Field at Findon. The small, rural site in the national park has fully furnished five-metre cotton canvas bell tents at a rural spot between Findon and Patching. You’ll be right out in the countryside here, with the seaside at Worthing only 15 minutes’ drive away. While it’s quite a small site, there’s enough room for kids to run about, swipe at a shuttlecock or sling a frisbee about. In the evening, you may want to cook up some tasty things to eat on the firepit provided or seek out one of several eateries a short walk away, including pubs, a restaurant and a café. It’s a lovely set-up on site when it comes to both facilities and views. There are horses in the paddock next door, hills in the distance and sometimes a local deer or buzzard passing by. Facilities-wise, the bell tents all have a double bed with a comfy mattress, plus pretty fairy lights, hurricane lamps and snuggly throws for a cosy feeling. All bedding, including a duvet and pillows, are provided for the double bed and up to two single camp beds (which have a mattress topper for extra comfort). There’s no electricity here, so make sure to bring a torch to supplement the solar-powered lights outside the tent. There are two chemical toilets, two gas-powered hot showers and an open-air sink for washing up, all shared with the site's other guests.

Local attractions

The closest you’ll get to time travel is visiting the stunning local historical sites. Arundel Castle (15 minutes’ drive), a restored medieval castle, is a grand, grand sight indeed, and that’s without the additional costumed characters and re-enactments that often take place. When you’re in the area, call by Arundel Cathedral of Our Lady & St Philip Howard (15 minutes) too. The National Trust site at Cissbury Ring (five minutes) isn’t just for hiking; it has a Neolithic flint mine and Iron Age hillfort. Devil’s Dyke (half an hour), an Anglo-Saxon-built defence, is another spot to add to your historical-themed tour. Simple pleasures like paddles in the sea are easily found around the beach and pier in Worthing (15 minutes) or the beach and harbour in Littlehampton (20 minutes). If you have a few small family members to plan for, Brighton (45 minutes) has a beach and pier, plus an aquarium and other attractions to fall back on. Family-friendly attractions are plentiful around here, with Fishers Farm Park (20 minutes) and the Drusillas Park zoo (45 minutes) both within driving distance too.

Bell tent

Liked: We liked everything. It was setup beautifully when we arrived. There is a good space between each bell tent. It was nice sitting with the fire pit (supplied by site) in the evening's and kids enjoying marshmallows. The owners are lovely and friendly.

Bell tent

Liked: Great location. It was a small site which was lovely. Communication from host was really good, with directions and welcome message sent the morning of stay. Tent was set up really nicely, all beds very comfortable, the kids definitely appreciated the mattress toppers on their beds.

Disliked: The showers could be a bit larger as not much space. Parking wasn’t far from tent however we had a lot of stuff as had two kids so a wheel barrow or cart might be nice to get things to and from the tent.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments - glad you all enjoyed your stay - we will look at supplying a wheel barrow for next season

Bell tent

Liked: This was the perfect way to test camping with my 5 year old daughter. Everything needed was provided and the tent was so cosy that we barely noticed the overnight thunderstorm! I would definitely recommend and hope to plan another trip here soon.

Disliked: Shower cubicles could do with some extra touches to make the showering experience a little easier and more pleasant.

Bell tent

Liked: Nice small camping area. Only 4 tents. The bell tent was set up beautifully. The parking area was very close to the tent. Communication was brilliant. I received a text on the morning of our stay with directions and showing which tent was ours which was brilliant. We stayed during extremely high winds and it was reassuring to have someone come and check on the tent and re-peg it so it stayed secure. Toilets and washing facilities were clean although very basic. Very enjoyable stay

Disliked: Considering this was glamping, the facilities were very basic although this didn't particularly bother us. We have stayed in 'wild camping" sites that have had better facilities so for the price I feel they couldn't been better. Shower wasn't the best.

Bell tent

Liked: The tent was amazing, beds comfy and warm and tent withstood gale force winds easily! Really nice that there is only four tents on the field and plenty of space between each. Easy to find and get to.

Disliked: I think the facilities don’t match the tent provision, whilst functional very basic, only one hook in the shower area for a towel, another needed for clothes. Washing up area needs shelter if only from the trees if not the elements. Noise from the main road could be heard but some ear plugs soon sorted that.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review - noted re the shower hook and we will get another one added !

Bell tent

Liked: We had a fantastic weekend. Esta was incredibly helpful when we arrived. The bell tent was beautifully presented and the chairs and table were a huge bonus. We all slept well (only noticed the road noise slightly) and enjoyed our first experience of ‘wild camping’ whilst still having the comfort of a bed. We are all keen to come again soon.
