View from the site

  • Peaceful site on a working sheep farm in the South Downs National Park
  • Bignor Roman Villa 25 minutes’ drive; Bognor Regis 35 minutes
  • No access by vehicles, only on foot or by bike; communal kitchen
What is it that estate agents always say? ‘Location, location, location.’ And the remote location of Gumber Farm is certainly outstanding: there is no vehicular access to this small sheep farm within the National Trust’s Slindon Estate, slap bang in the middle of the South Downs National Park. Peace and quiet are pretty much guaranteed… Because there is no access by vehicles, you can only rock up to the site on foot or by bike, having left your car at Bignor Hill or Northwood Junction. The one-and-a-half-mile hike from either car park ought to give you a good idea of the splendid trails that await in the area: some through woodland carpeted with colourful wildflowers, others crossing farmland scattered with ancient remains like Stane Street, a Roman road. The nearest supermarket is in Fontwell (about five miles away), so you might want to have enough provisions to see you through a couple of days at least. In addition to a communal kitchen with kettle, gas hob, sink and recycling facilities (plus plenty of pots, pans, crockery and cutlery), there is a barbecue. You can also get your own campfire going. In fact, that’s a pretty sweet way to spend an evening at the farm: sitting around the fire, gazing up at the spectacular dark skies overhead. Other facilities include a toilet and shower block (remember to bring your own towels, though) and a drying room.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great location just off the South Downs way with excellent showers and a well setup kitchen. Drying room would be really handy at other times too.

Disliked: No so much a dislike but an FYI if you are camping there are no plugs where you charge phones etc and there is basically no Vodafone coverage at the site

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I camped for the night with my 14 and 10 year old boys arriving a bit soggy after a 12 mile hike on the SDW. It was great to have the communal lounge, kitchen, drying room and fire pit. We tried to follow traditional Bothy rules and leave everything as we found it. Everything including the washrooms were exceptionally clean. Having arrived after dark it was amazing to wake up to see the stunning location where we’d camped overnight. The people who run the site were lovely and friendly. All round this was a perfect little find. As it states you can’t drive there and can only reach here by foot or bike. For us I loved this about the place as gave us the taste of staying at an actual Bothy or Mountain refuge. Will definitely be back at some point!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Amazing facilities, toilets were very clean and well kept, lovely little kitchen. Also very nice walk there from Bignor Hill Car park. Fantastic location lovely woods and places to walk around. Also lovely owners very helpful. Definitely best for small groups, couples or lone travellers.

Disliked: The field is quite small which means you are quite close to other people, everyone that was there when when we went were very considerate but we do prefer to be a bit more secluded and private as you are right next to the other tents but this isn’t the end of the world.

Local attractions

Arundel (20 minutes’ drive) is dominated by a castle whose earliest parts (such as the keep and the gateway) date back to the 1100s. The elegant interiors, largely reworked in the late 19th century, house collections of paintings by the likes of Gainsborough and Canaletto, as well as furniture and tapestries. Discovered by chance in the 1810s, Bignor Roman Villa (25 minutes’ drive or a one-hour hike) is renowned for its well-preserved floor mosaics, which depict gladiatorial battles, animals and intricate swirls and geometric motifs. In summer, the farmland around the villa also features a sunflower maze. If you fancy a day at the seaside, Bognor Regis (35 minutes) has a pebbly beach and a pier with an amusement arcade. Along the promenade there are also a miniature golf course, inflatable structures and a miniature train (useful if you want to save your feet ahead of the walk back to the site), plus plenty of food stalls. For a sandy beach, head to West Wittering (40 minutes).
