  • Family-run farm site in the Kent Downs, a mile from Halling village
  • A 10-minute drive to Rochester, 20 minutes to Leeds Castle
  • Well-stocked farm shop on site; next to the North Downs Way
There’s history all around at Croquet Lawn Camping at Court Farm – this farm site in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is in the midst of the Medway’s megalithic sites (including Kit’s Coty and Coldrum Long Barrow), and part of an area once occupied by the Romans. The Lingham family can’t trace their history back quite that far, but they’ve still managed to notch up 150 years of living on this fine agricultural estate a mile from the village of Halling. The manor house dates back to the early middle ages though, and the estate is clearly a place that’s well settled in its environment (you can tell by the way the wild pheasants stroll nonchalantly around the place, and the fact that hawks, badgers and squirrels seem happy to stop by too…) This is still a working farm, so you’ll be surrounded by fields of arable crops and grass-fed sheep and cows, and with free-range chickens to see as well. All of this feeds into the very popular and well-stocked farm shop and bakery on site, which is open six days a week (not Mondays) and provides all sorts of local treats including fresh meat, bread and veg, dairy and deli snacks and Kentish fruit juices and local ales to wash it all down. All of this means you’re likely to want to barbecue or picnic as much as possible – and you’re welcome to do so, but it’s also handy to note that there’s an excellent pub in the village if you fancy venturing out.

Local attractions

You won’t have to go very far to get to the closest attraction – a simple 10-minute stroll gets you to the bright blue waters of St Andrew’s Lakes, for wild swims, fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking or a bounce across its inflatable assault course. If you’d rather stay dry, take a ramble through the farm’s woodland down to the marshlands alongside the Medway River, or set out for a walk on the North Downs Way, which passes by the site. If you’d like to tick off those ancient megalithic sites, plan a day taking in Kits Coty House (15 minutes’ drive) and Coldrum Long Barrow (20 minutes) – or follow the guided walk from the farm to the latter. Rochester (15 minutes) is another place to put on your list, for its museum, cathedral and castle, and you may also like to plan outings to Leeds Castle (20 minutes) and Canterbury (40 minutes). For a rather more modern day out, sign up for go-karting sessions at Buckmore Park (15 minutes) or get to grips with the bigger vehicles at Diggerland Kent (10 minutes).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location close to North Downs Way

Disliked: No sink in toilet, in a separate area other side of house. No shower.. Arrived late due to problems on route but did keep host informed. Unable to contact host when we arrived- he was at pub. When host returned he checked we had arrived but didnt tell us that the sink area would be locked overnight nor did he tell us there was a water tap in field. Anither camper had already shown us where the toilet was. After a full days cycling we had no water for a drink, to make tea or wash with. The sink area was also locked when we got up. Pretty disappointed.

From the manager: Hi there, We're very sorry about this miscommunication - as you can see from the "rave reviews" we've had in the past (10/10), this hasn't happend before. Normally I am there to show you around but unfortunately I had to visit family urgently in Australia. Apologies. Just wanted to point out though that our listing/description does not offer a shower and we make it clear that the amenities are indeed basic ie no sink in the toilet and you need to use the taps and tubs in our farm office area before a certain time. We lock up to ensure security at night. I think we will put signage in the hedge where the water tap is at the camp site as it may not be that obvious at dusk. Thanks for pointing that out. We normally have printed instructions available but as you say, it was an exceptional weekend given the public holiday and our earlier closing times for the farm shop on Sundays. Hope you come back! We'll make sure it is an easier arrival next time :) cheers, Tania Lingham

10/10 - we will very likely be back again next year!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: - It was peaceful and quiet. - It's not a large space so I think at full capacity you might have 8-10 other tents. - Plenty of wild birds around, pheasants, partridges, kestrels etc. - The field was in great condition, with a soft carpet of grass. - Hot running water in the main house which was great for washing up etc. - The farmer was busy but popped by morning and evenings to ensure we had everything we needed. - Great location to walk up onto the North Downs. - Great value butchers shop and bakery on the farm itself.

Disliked: - The farm shop closed early at 1pm (likely because of the Jubilee weekend). - Earwig season - No smaller barbecues on the pitch, which is understandable as there are large fields of crops around so it's a fire hazard, and it would also destroy the camping field.
