  • Kent motorhome site at a World War II gun battery in Capel-le-Ferne
  • Port of Dover 10 minutes’ drive; Folkestone Eurotunnel 20 minutes
  • Hardstanding pitches with electric hook-ups; pub across the road
And now for something completely different… It’s not every day you get the chance to camp right alongside the unrestored remains of a World War II gun battery. Yes, Capel Battery is opening its doors to motorhomes in a quiet location atop the White Cliffs in Kent – and, in an extra bonus for war history aficionados, the thought-provoking Battle of Britain Memorial is just five minutes’ stroll away. With far-reaching views over Dover to the English Channel and (on a clear day) France, the site sits in the village of Capel-le-Ferne, 10 minutes’ drive from the Port of Dover and 20 minutes from Folkestone's Eurotunnel terminal, making it a handy stop for overnighters starting or rounding off their holidays in Europe. With room for just a handful of pitches – each with an electric hook-up – this back-to-basics site is just a few steps away from a local pub, open for Kentish beers, lunch and dinner daily. If you’re going down the self-catering route, you can source supplies at the supermarkets on the edge of Folkestone (five minutes' drive).

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: A very basic site as they are excavating the old battery so looks a bit like a building site BUT we had a wonderful time EHU and water supplied. Lovely walks and right next door to the Battle of Britain memorial - a great pub the other side called the valiant sailor and we had a very good meal. So if you are going for a weekend or overnight and want to take in the beautiful views and sea air and are not worried about services - then this is a great stop over - also owners very helpful

Disliked: No waste facilities

From the manager: We added waste bin to the site.

An interesting place to stay. Will stay again.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Unique place to pitch. Excellent pre-arrival comms. Very historic place - great to see land owner and enthusiasts gradually restoring the historic structures on the site. Great work! Peaceful.

Disliked: At £35 this is an expensive pitch - it is secure and offers EHU and water, but no bin for rubbish and no CDP. Look upon it as making a contribution to the restoration of the gun battery. It’s a bit rough and ready and a little isolated, but great for WW2 historians and wild campers.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Location

Disliked: Our disappointment started at the entrance gate. Due to lack of space you have to park sideways-on to the gates while you battle to unlock and open them (the latch is bent and very, very hard to pull out). You then have to swing back out onto the busy road to get round the corner and through the gates. It would just be so much easier if the gates were set further back from the road (and the bent latch was replaced). Once through the gates we drove down a concrete drive through what looked like a building site (further evidenced by the fleet of builders vans which arrived in the morning), with rubble, bits of scrap metal, an old plane fuselage, plastic buckets, bits of machinery and other detritus. Not what we had expected. If you drive all the way to the end of the concrete there is a pleasant view across the neatly cut lawns of the Battle of Britain Memorial to the sea beyond. However, the brand new EHU points are positioned well back from the viewpoint - if you park near them you have a view of two storage containers, some rubble and plastic cones! We chose to park where the view was and do without hook-up but at £35 for the night it would have been over-priced even with EHU. Great trouble has been taken to create an elevated seating area on top of the gun battery with a nice view, but you have to walk over an ankle-twisting obstacle course to get to it. The gun battery itself is very interesting and it’s obvious a great deal of work has been put into excavating it. However, the site as a whole is one big trip and fall hazard - it would certainly be a dangerous place for children and I’m surprised the campsite isn’t listed as adults only. To be honest we spent some time discussing whether to stay or not but the reasonable view and easy access to the Battle of Britain Memorial and the coastal path convinced us to stay and we had a peaceful night. I’m sure Capel Battery will make a really nice campsite one day but I really don’t think it’s ready just yet.

Local attractions

With a gun battery on site for you to explore, and the Battle of Britain Memorial five minutes’ walk away, you may have had your fill of war history. But don’t forget that underneath the mighty medieval Dover Castle (10 minutes’ drive), you can wander through a warren of secret wartime tunnels, visit a subterranean hospital and book a Cold War-themed escape room challenge. If you’re hanging around in Kent for a while, there are wild animal encounters to be had at Port Lympne Safari Park (20 minutes), and silverback gorillas to watch out for at Howletts Wild Animal Park (half an hour). If you’d rather have a look around old houses, National Trust-owned Sissinghurst Castle Garden (50 minutes) is open for tours of the tower, library and parkland created by author Vita Sackville-West in the 1930s. Folkestone Old Town (10 minutes) is a pretty place to have a look around, with lots of indie art galleries and shops to browse, while The Stade promenade leads to a wide, sandy beach for a snooze in the sun or a quick dip in the sea. When you’re feeling peckish, head for the Harbour Arm for street-food stalls selling all sorts of yummy mezze and pizzas.
