  • Peaceful, family-friendly site on the outskirts of Deal, Kent
  • Bettshanger Country Park five minutes’ drive; Margate half an hour
  • Restaurant for breakfast and dinner; bar with big-screen TV; play area
The Garden of England (that’s Kent, in case you didn’t get the memo) is yours to explore from Lillyroos, a family-friendly site in the countryside that surrounds the seaside town of Deal. The location makes this spot equally suited to watersports enthusiasts (the coast is about 10 minutes’ drive away), keen countryside hikers and cyclists (with paths leading directly off the site) and history buffs, who can visit the medieval town of Sandwich (10 minutes) and the city of Canterbury (half an hour). With a kitchen preparing home-cooked breakfasts (featuring eggs laid by the resident chickens and freshly brewed coffee) and evening meals, plus a cosy bar serving local beers and ciders (which you can sip while lounging on a hay bale), this is also a sweet spot for anyone who is not quite to abandon all creature comforts. Speaking of food… Barbecues are allowed, and you can get your provisions in Deal or at the farmers’ market just down the A258 (a short drive or a five-minute walk), which also has a café. There’s a big-screen TV if you (or a member of your party) just cannot go without your footie while on holiday, and a play area for the kids. This is a quiet site: no shouting or singing after 10pm, and no music (whether live or amplified), so leave your beloved ukulele at home. Dogs are welcome, but do let the site owners know in advance if your canine companion is coming along. Amenities on site include toilet and shower blocks, a washing-up area, ice-pack freezing facilities and recycling points.

Liked: Lillyroos Campsite is a fantastic spot for a relaxing getaway. The pitches are spacious and set in a beautiful natural setting, offering plenty of peace and quiet. The facilities, including the showers and toilets, are clean and well-kept, which makes the stay comfortable. The staff are incredibly friendly and always on hand to help with any questions or needs, making you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. It’s a great place for families, with lots of open space for kids to play and plenty of nearby walking trails to explore. Overall, Lillyroos Campsite offers a perfect balance of nature and convenience, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful camping experience.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This friendly, well organised little campsite is an excellent base from which to explore eastern Kent. The facilities were clean, with warm showers and spacious loos. The cafe/bar was a lovely treat, and actually did decaffeinated lattes! There was a really cosy social area with fantastic sofas and a wood burner, that if it had been raining, would have been a life saver. The transport links to this site are great - it’s easy to get to by road, but also accessible by rail, as it is more or less within walking distance of Deal station, but is also on the bus route from Deal to Sandwich.

Disliked: I didn't look very hard, but I didn’t see any recycling facilities, so I’ve taken my recycling home.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We had booked to stay the evening at Lillyroos, we got to the site, opened my van door and we were absolutely covered in tiny flies. I took a photo of them and I believe they are called fungus gnats. They come off of the roots of fern trees and the site is surrounded by them. They were absolutely everywhere, in our hair, in our eyes, ears and mouth. I tried moving pitch but it was just the same. I know it’s nature but it’s as if a fertiliser had been applied to the ground and it just made it unbearable. We’re used to staying in natural sites and off grid camping so it wasn’t as though we were being precious, I’ve never experienced anything like this. We then had to leave the site late at night and try to find some last minute accommodation elsewhere.

Disliked: We tried to contact the owners at the time, there was no answer. I emailed them and didn’t get a reply. I then contacted the owners via pitch up at which point I finally got a reply to say that they were not prepared to issue any form of refund. We understand it’s nature and there’s not much they can do about it but surely they should be a bit more understanding when people decide not to stay in those conditions.

From the manager: Thank you for sharing your experience, although we're disappointed that it didn't meet your expectations. Firstly, we need to address that you arrived at the site at 9:30pm, outside of our designated check-in hours, which are clearly stated in our terms and conditions as being between 3:00pm and 8:00pm. These hours are in place to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for all guests. Had you arrived during the correct time, one of our team members would have greeted you, shown you around the campsite, and addressed any concerns immediately, as we do with all our guests. Regarding your attempt to contact us, it appears you called our office phone line outside of business hours. Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware of the call at the time, but had you left a message, someone from our team would have gotten back to you as soon as they had seen it. As for the insects, Lillyroos is situated in a beautiful, natural environment, and while we do our utmost to maintain a pleasant stay, we cannot control the presence of insects that are part of the ecosystem. The gnats you encountered are indeed common in rural settings like ours, especially near the surrounding vegetation. We also checked with other campers onsite, and no one reported any issues with flies. It’s possible that the use of headlights upon arrival may have attracted more insects to your immediate vicinity. We regret that you found the situation unbearable and had to leave early. However, as someone who is accustomed to natural and off-grid camping, it is surprising that this particular experience caused so much distress. Finally, as stated in our terms and conditions, refunds are not issued for circumstances beyond our control, such as weather or natural occurrences—a standard policy across many outdoor accommodation providers. We wish you the best in your future travels and hope you find sites that better align with your expectations.

Local attractions

You can learn all about the area’s coal-mining past at the Kent Mining Museum at Bettshanger Country Park (five minutes’ drive), where there are also walking and cycling paths for all abilities, from a family-friendly tarmac track to some pretty challenging routes for experienced mountain bikers. Kids can also have a go at archery and orienteering. With its vast pebbly beach, two historic castles and long promenade skirted by a cycle path, Deal is a great destination for families. Grab some fish and chips and sit on Walmer Green (on Sunday afternoons, in the summer, there is live music at the bandstand), or stroll along the pier, keeping an eye on the Timeball Tower’s regular drop. Whether you’re into vintage rides (at colourful Dreamland amusement park) or modern art exhibitions (at Turner Contemporary), Margate (half an hour) has something for you. There’s also a sandy beach with a tidal pool, and an Old Town dotted with independent shops and cafés.
