  • Family-run park with spacious pitching areas
  • A couple of miles from Sandown Bay and Shanklin
  • Reduced ferry price for customers
Old Barn Touring Park is named after its Grade II-listed thatched barn at the park entrance, now used as a games room for rainy days or lazy hours. It’s a family-run park with pitches all set in a number of small areas secluded by hedges and with only a handful of pitches per spot. A communal patio has free wifi. Once heading off site, there’s a bus running from Newport to Ryde within five minutes’ walk of the park, and the sandy beaches of Sandown Bay and Shanklin are within a couple of miles. Elsewhere on site there’s a tiled amenities block with spacious showers, an outdoor play area for the under-eights, a big family bathroom and a reception area with info on things to do on the Isle of Wight. There’s no food shop, but the site sells camping and Calor gas and has ice pack freezing, and two supermarkets are just down the road. The Old Barn team (a friendly and helpful gang made up of Terry, Emma and Gary) can arrange ferries for guests at a reduced price: let them know using the 'special requests' when you book.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location, with nearby walks.

Disliked: Poor washing, shower and toilet facilities desperately in need of investment/rebuild/refurbishment. Untended camping field - the grass badly needed cutting.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The receptionist was very friendly and offered us alternative pitches when we were not happy with the one we had been allocated. Clean toilets and the free wifi was quite good as well. The grounds are kept well and the whole site was clean and tidy.

Disliked: The site is on quite a busy road. Although this did not overly bother us, it does let the site down a little as it is quite noisy most of the time. The site is also at the end of a runway for light aircraft. The first day we was there the planes were taking off over us which was really noisy. Thankfully the rest of the days they were coming in to land over us so were much quieter. This may be us being fussy but we did struggle with the pitches as the first few we were offered were very uneven and although we are in a motorhome and do have chucks to go under the wheels, the pitches just weren't great. Although we were finally offered one that was completely flat and we didn't need the chucks at all. I also don't agree with having to pay for the use of the showers separately. In my opinion this should be part of the cost of the pitch. Although I do appreciate that this is relatively common, I just don't like it.

Liked: Nice site layout, we had an electric grass pitch, situated in a small area divided up with hedges. The facilities were a bit dated but kept very clean.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The size of the pitch, ample room for our tent and awning. Length of the shower once 20p inserted was brilliant. Cleanliness of toilet blocks was great too.

Disliked: Toilets running out of loo roll (female). Not able to wash hands properly as tap needed a hand on it to use. Soap dispensers not very good.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Spacious size pitch and reception staff helpful.

Disliked: Toilet block looks derelict and unloved , weeds , loose steps and large flakes of blue paint by entrance to gents , seems floor and wall tiles in the block have been over painted at some time ! , we opted not to use the facilities, looked dirty! All very disappointing. Needs some serious TLC ! The areas around the dustbin were dirty with some old looking rat poison stations, we did see one large rodent by the dustbins !!.

From the manager: We are so sorry that you felt this way and wish that you had come to speak to us. When we took over the site 5 years ago the toilet block was very dated and in need of a lot of work. Our intention was to completely overall it but then the pandemic coming meant that we couldn't open and we had to use the funds we had for that to keep afloat. It meant that we couldn't implement all of the changes we wanted to make and so we made cosmetic upgrades. Over the past 5 years we have continued to make changes to the facilities, we lowered the ceilings to make it warmer, changed the lighting to make it easier to see in there, put in new hand dryers, hair dryers and shaving points. Yes we painted the tiles on the walls and floors and for some reason the paint in the men's toilet has reacted (if you had looked in the ladies you would have seen that it hasn't in there even though it is the same paint) and while we are aware that it doesn't look great I can't close down the men's facilities for 3 days to paint the floor, it has to wait until we are closed as does much of the repair work and upgrades. We do have bait boxes around the bin areas to try to deter vermin, as should all campsites It is inevitable that where there are humans and rubbish there will be vermin and we are trying hard to keep them away but unfortunately bait boxes are not pretty. When you say that area around the dustbins is dirty I don't really know what you mean, there are some leaves from the bushes around them, the bins get emptied once or twice a day and if any rubbish is outside of the bins it gets picked up. Again perhaps if you had come to speak to me you could have explained what you mean and I could have dealt with it at the time.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Good old school clean facilities, site set out in hedge screened blocks, pitches fairly level, all grass with EHU, close to big shops and coast, Got a kids play area, a public bridleway run along side off into the hill behind

Disliked: Only gripe, hedges were getting over grown especially around the bins and taps

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a lovely review. The hedges had gotten a bit wild over the last few weeks (all that lovely sunshine) We will be tackling them as soon as all the birds have finished nesting in the next couple of weeks. We look forward to seeing you again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Friendly staff. Close to nearby beach and shops. Site level and plenty of room/ space to pitch the motor home on. Water station nearby and rubbish bins.

Disliked: Having to queue for a shower as only 2 on the campsite for the women's block. Plenty of sinks and toilets though. Area could do with a refurbishment as very tired looking. Pitches not clearly marked out and not much signage around the site. Price booked and paid for prior to staying was then advertised at a cheaper rate to stay on the website, whilst I was staying there which was a little disappointing!!

Local attractions

The Isle of Wight has history, nature, dinosaurs, museums, award-winning beaches, theme parks and more to explore: start off at nearby Sandown Bay for amusements on the pier and to begin a lope around the 67-mile long Isle of Wight Coast Path to Shanklin and from there to Ventnor. Blackgang Chine, six miles from Ventnor, is now an eccentric amusement park with rides, lifesized plastic dinosaurs and rollercoasters in its Victorian garden setting. Blackgang Chine’s sister site, Robin Hill theme park, just outside Newport, has more rides, a wooden maze, toboggan run and an adventure playground; less excitable types can go to the park’s Combley Roman villa, flutter around the butterfly garden or spot squirrels on the Red Squirrel Safari. Animal enthusiasts have loads to pick from: tigers and other big cats at the Isle of Wight Zoo, over 200 rare and exotic species at Amazon World Zoo Park and the biggest wildlife park on the island, Seaview Wildlife Encounter. For history, the seaside palace of Osborne House was the island hideaway of Queen Victoria and has her own private beach – and bathing machine – now open to the public. There’s also Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles I fled to after escaping captivity at Hampton Court and where he was banged up again by Colonel Hammond: dress up in Civil War clothes here or have a game of bowls on the same green used by the unpopular king.
