  • Secluded grass pitches on a former farm near Braintree in Essex
  • A 15-minute drive to Hedingham Castle; 40 minutes to Dedham Vale
  • Antiques, farm shop and café on site; walks five minutes’ drive away
As well as having a quiet location near the market towns of Halstead and Braintree in Essex, Petersfield Village’s grass pitches are set right next to an antiques market. The grass pitches are on an old farm that’s also home to a treasure trove of pre-loved furniture stalls – making this a real gem of a spot if you're the sort that likes to dig around for a priceless diamond ring or elegant piece of Georgian furniture. As well as all the antique concessions on site, there’s a well-stocked farm shop, so you won’t need to worry about running out of essentials. The site also has a café in case you don’t feel like cooking – and if you’re in need of a bit of pampering there's also a wellness centre and hair and beauty salon on site (extra charge). A smashing spot for antiques hunters this may be, but Petersfield Village is also close to masses of family walks and cycle ways, so get those boots on and head for Broaks Wood (five minutes’ drive) to find the rare Giant Redwood grove. Biking families can join the Flitch Way at Braintree (10 minutes) running on former railway lines, for gentle rides along tree-lined trails. So what to expect on site? The dog-friendly camping fields are well-serviced with a toilet block and a parent-and-baby facility.

Local attractions

Walkers can explore further afield and discover peaceful shaded rambles in Hatfield Forest, or take the circular route from coastal Maldon to Northey Island. And of course, you’re close to Constable Country in Dedham Vale (all 40 minutes’ drive) for riverside adventures and picnics amid an Area of Outstanding National Beauty. For a change of pace – or a rainy day – take the kids for a messy morning creating wonky pots at Essex Pottery Studio (10 minutes), or jump on board a mini train at East Anglian Railway Museum (20 minutes). Boydells Dairy Farm (15 minutes) should keep the tiddlers happy, with lamb feeding (in season) and guided farm tours. If you’d like to up the cultural input into your holiday, have a nose around the Tudor rooms at half-timbered Paycocke’s House and Garden (20 minutes), all decked out for an Elizabethan banquet, or follow the sculpture trail through the grounds of majestic Hedingham Castle (15 minutes).

Ujjayi bell tent (four person)

Liked: Absolutely nothing, false advertisement

Disliked: Smell, mould, rubbish fire pit, no fridge, no proper beds, no showers, no space between pitches

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I am sorry you feel this way. but i have to disagree to some off your comments firstly i advised you there was nt any showers and i offered you a refund before you came here. when you arrived you had the choice of a new bell tent or a yurt .yes the yurt visually had mould stain but it was not mouldy and it did not smell the fire pits are recycled washing machine drums that work very well and are safer as they are contained .there is a communal fridge .. and there is plenty of space between pitches. the reason you did nt receive a refund is because you didn't arrive till late you had been given the option to cancel i had, you were quite rude everyone else was happy except yourselves clearly you were having a bad day .and expected something more glamourous .sorry about that

Excellent pop up site. Glamming pods available for hire.
