Set off for the seaside and an action-packed break at Essex Outdoors Mersea, right on the Mersea Island coast, a couple of miles from West Mersea and about 20 minutes’ drive from Colchester. You’d best come along here armed with walking shoes, bikes, wetsuits and swimming kit as there are plenty of places to get active along this stretch of coast. The first two can be put into action at Cudmore Grove Country Park, a couple of miles away, and the latter will come in handy for dips in the sea or watersports at the neighbouring boating lake. On top of that, there’s always the option to book the kids in for activity days at the on-site outdoor centre… or simply to put your feet up and relax if you prefer. West Mersea, about 10 minutes away by car or bike, is a great place to hang out: the pretty town has colourful beach huts along its sandy stretch, plus places to go crabbing. There are also lots of places to go out for meals or pick up supplies for a barbecue back at base (the fresh seafood is particularly fine around here…) It’s a fairly simple setup at this site close to the shoreline but guests have access to all the essentials, including a launderette, a washing-up area and bathroom facilities that are suitable for less mobile guests.
