  • Well-maintained park within walking distance of ancient Colchester
  • Easy access to London, East Anglia, Suffolk and Essex
  • Three facility blocks: never queue for the toilet or shower
Excellent excellent Essex... an easy hour from London, a comely coastline, and close to East Anglia, Constable Country and the Sussex coast for day trips – it's all very excellent indeed. And then there's Colchester, the ancient town settled by the Romans way back when and full of superb sights, museums and leisure offerings – all very excellent too. If you're visiting Essex for any of the above, a march along to high-quality Colchester Country Park should be an excellent option, as it's within walking distance of Colchester city centre and close to the coasts of Essex and Sussex. Arrange a day trip to London from here or use the park as a base to or from ferry ports: but a day or two in Colchester should surely be had too... The park is set in pretty parkland with roomy pitches and spacious fields. Facilities are plentiful – no queuing here – and include three spotlessly kept amenities blocks with private cubicles and free hot water. There's also a dedicated disabled unit, dishwashing and laundry areas, a large play area and a shop.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Used as overnight stop on return trip to UK from Netherlands on Harwich ferry. Friendly warden who let a group of us who all came off same ferry in after reception hours (pre-warned). Slightly 'old fashioned' toilet block, but clean and perfectly usable. Good site as travel stop or to explore Cochester and the local area.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We stayed one night to practice setting up our new caravan and packing away. Really enjoyed our stay; lovely clean facilities, wide pitch, easy access to A12, felt secure to have key fob access

Disliked: Some road noise due to close proximity of A12 but not the fault of the site, we got used to it, it is helpful to be so close to it as newbie caravan towers!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nice, well kept site. People around considerate for noise etc. Secure and gated. Can walk into centre.

Disliked: Asked for a quiet pitch but I honestly don’t think you can get one. The a12 runs along the rear and traffic is accelerating as it’s just off the junction. Lots of Lewis Hamilton wannabes! The shower and toilet facilities are old and dated.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: It felt very safe. As a single mother camping with an SEN child I was overjoyed with our first stay here. We haven’t camped just us before and it was brilliant! The loos and showers etc were impeccably clean and really well taken care of. The site is lovely and peaceful with a small play park for the littles! The on-site staff were so friendly and kind. Logged entry into and out of the park meant there was an additional level of safety. It was lovely and quiet and peaceful, pitches were far enough away to not disturb each other. No wifi (that I was aware of) but that was one of the things I really liked! Sitting outside at 7pm and just colouring and watching for wildlife was amazing! I can not recommend it highly enough!

Disliked: Nothing!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Great site, lovely friendly welcome on arrival. Plenty of space around the pitch. Friendly goodbye on departure. Powerful showers. Enjoyed it and would consider returning.

Disliked: A little noise from the main road. Showers could do with some extra space to hang/store your clothes whilst showering.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The facilities were fantastic, kept clean at all times. A number of toilet and washing blocks to service all guests and we were never left waiting for a shower. There was a small park directly behind us which kept the little ones entertained and entertainment was put on for the weekend with games for the kids and a singer later on for the adults who also through in a bit of karaoke for anyone that was brave enough The staff were so incredibly friendly throughout and couldn’t do enough for you. The pitches were completely flat (hard standing) and had plenty of space for your awning and car with grass areas in between guests. Interns of location it was really close to pubs, shops etc and was easily walkable in about 10/15 mins. Clacton and Walton were both about 30/40 mins away so we had some lovely trips to the beaches. Walton in particular was a favourite, a little quieter as dog friendly but it was a really lovely town. The tide was in early however which some got caught out with, i think it was about 2.30 and there were people having to frantically gather there throngs together but was worth an earlier get up and there was plenty to do in the town centre nice high tide was in effect. Clacton was a traditional seaside resort with amusements, shops and eateries galore. The pier was great for keeping us all entertained and the rides were quite reasonable in terms of cost. All in all a really lovely place to visit

Disliked: The only thing that lets the place down is that it’s right next to the slip road of the motorway so was extremely noisy. I hadn’t read this before as it would have definitely been a factor for our stay. You do tune out a little bit but even in a caravan it felt the trucks were really close. Ear plugs are a must for you to get a decent nights sleep. Such a shame as other than that it was such a nice site and ticked all of our boxes at a reasonable cost per night.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Good washing / cleaning facilities. Friendly staff. There is a nice walk via footpath in to Colchester town and there are other surrounding walks, which are nice

Disliked: Surrounded by a couple of very busy roads. Distance from pitch to electric hookup is quite far but it does say that on the website to be fair. Pitches are quite close together

Local attractions

Classic Colchester is a popular pick for holidaymakers in the area, who come to see Colchester Castle and Castle Museum with its extensive exhibit on Roman Colchester; the social history Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum in the city's former All Saints' Church. Plenty of restaurants, pubs and shops are here too, as well as decent leisure options like a leisure centre, ten-pin bowling, roller skating, the Mercury Theatre, the Arts Centre and the Minories Gallery. If you're on holiday with kids, Colchester Zoo is always a hit, as is the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel which has heaps of activities for young explorers. The Colne Valley Railway's mile of track is at the old village of Castle Hedingham, also well worth a look for its Norman Hedingham Castle and timber-framed medieval buildings. The area surrounding Colchester Country Park is excellent walking, cycling and nature spotting land with miles of nature reserves, footpaths and bike trails: head from Colchester to Alresford a mile and a half away or join up with the 81-mile long Essex Way from Epping to Harwich.
