  • Peaceful back-to-basics rural site in the village of Telscombe
  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach
  • Organic meat and free-range eggs available to buy from the farm
‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park. And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats. Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs. Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Check in was really easy, we arrived, picked our own pitch and then someone came around to check us in and deliver our logs. Beautiful views. A clean, tidy and basic site which is exactly what we were looking for. Great pitch sizes. The perfect place to see beautiful sunrise/sunset. Dog friendly. We will be back again to stay in the future.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The views were excellent and the pitches nicely spaced around the field. The toilets and showers were very clean, but as mentioned, don’t expect a hot power shower!

Disliked: The approach to the field is full of pot holes and loose gravel, so not great on a motorbike! The check-in process wasn’t clear, but it seemed that you pick your own pitch and someone comes round to sign you in?

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The clear arrival and check in details. Toilets were clean. Everyone on the site respectful of noise restrictions.

Disliked: We were in a campervan. We arrived. Checked in. It was annotated what pitch number we were. We had a brew etc. Then headed off to get food. Once we got back (in the dark) we noticed another campervan in the pitch we were checked in to. It was frustrating that they hadn't been told it was ready occupied. Would you consider putting reserved signs in pitches once they had been selected?

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review we really appreciate it. I'm so sorry you had to change pitch, maybe next time if you're leaving in your campervan you could try leaving something behind on your pitch like camping chairs for example so that others will know the pitch is occupied or if you like you could ask us to leave a reserve sign for you.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The pitches are a great size, the views lovely, the food available to buy amazing. It’s short walk all down hill to the local Tescos and quiet at night except the racers in the town

Disliked: the water pressure awful, but that’s what you get at the top of a very hill.

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour. Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea. If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site. There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.
