  • Two miles from the beach at Bexhill-on-Sea
  • Family-friendly site with play areas and shop
  • Within easy reach of the historic sites of 1066 Country
Ditch the wheels and settle down for a Sussex seaside and heritage stay at award-winning and colourful Chestnut Meadow Camping and Caravan Park, on the outskirts of the seaside town of Bexhill-on-Sea. A bus stop is right in front of the site so you can get around without having to drive: the beach is a couple of miles away. Chestnut Meadow is in the historic part of green and pleasant England known as 1066 Country, so called after the 11th-century Battle of Hastings and the introduction of Norman rule into the land (if these facts make the kids yawn, they'll probably be gorily interested instead in how Harold died). Battle Abbey, Herstmonceux Castle and Bodiam Castle are nearby to explore the area's history, all reachable via local cycle routes. A family-friendly site, Chestnut Meadow has a playground, plenty of room to play, and a modern, heated shower block including a parent and baby washroom. There's also a small shop. A range of eco-friendly initiatives have been introduced on site, including recycling points, wildlife areas and the use of recycled materials where possible.

Great site, praise for clean facilities, level pitches, friendly staff, and the cafe. Kids and pets welcome, lodges with hot tubs loved. Some maintenance/cleanliness niggles, few amenity complaints (no cafe/Wi-Fi) & some noise reported.

York 3 bedroom lodge (hot tub, no pets)

Liked Home from home but with a hot tub.
Lovely and comfortable. Well set out site . Fairly well equipped kitchen. If there’s anything you know you can’t cook without maybe bring it. I bought a couple of oven baking deep tins as l wanted to cook chicken and lots of veggies in the oven. The only oven tin provided was a bun tin, and a flat tray.
Pizza can was great.

Disliked Choice of beds only to accommodate a family made our stay a bit awkward.
Bunk bed room meant one person on the bottom as no one wanted to climb upto the top. Also no one wanted to share a double bed . It would be fantastic if some lodges had just twin rooms or just double beds for couples.
A bit more privacy between lodges would be great. Maybe a bit of planting up would do it?
Disappointed the cafe was shut.
Found the Hob difficult to use. TV wouldn’t connect to anything so we didn’t watch it.

2 bedroom cabin (hot tub, pet friendly)

Liked Great cabin stay, with lots of space and was clean and tidy. Hot tub was a great asset and enhanced our stay.
There wasn’t anyone else on the site but this didn’t bother us too much.

Disliked There was no gate on the fence so wasn’t fenced in, this wasn’t safe for pets or children.
We also paid extra for late check out but the maintenance person after emptied the hot tub was doing odd jobs around our cabin. It felt very intrusive as we were getting ready. In the end I asked him to leave so we could pack up privately

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Level site which was very quiet and the toilet block and showers were adequate. The electricity worked.

Disliked Stupid questionnaire before arriving asking for copy of passport, driving license or identity card to be submitted online. No staff member on site and no communication regarding pitch to use when we arrived even though we had been asked to state our arrival time. We booked a hard standing pitch but there were none even though they were marked on a site plan that we saw on the reception area notice board. All of the pitches were grass pitches and were very muddy. The Wi-Fi was poor and I could only connect when I moved close to the reception area.

I never saw any staff on site during our 2 day stay.

Bexhill-on-Sea beach, De La Warr Pavilion and Bexhill Museum are within two miles for seasidey days among Sussex coast and heritage. A bit further along the coast, the Blue Reef Aquarium, fishermen's museum and historic sites of Hastings can be reached within six miles: do take the cliff railway from its West Hill stop to delve into the adventure of local smuggling up at St Clement's Caves. To explore more about how the Normans took over all those years ago, trot along to the English Heritage 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield attraction five miles or so away, set at the abbey built on the battlefield in its bloody aftermath. More splendid Sussex castles are at Herstmonceux (seven miles) and Bodiam (12 miles), while for hair-raising adventures, you could take the kids to Drusillas Park or the Knockhatch Adventure Park, both 15 miles away.
