  • Luxurious, handcrafted adults-only shepherd’s hut in rural East Sussex
  • A 15-minute drive to Battle Abbey and 20 minutes to Hastings Castle
  • Furnished glamping pod with walks from site; beach 20 minutes’ drive
A lovingly handcrafted shepherd’s hut with a vintage vibe, the Hogget Hut sits in its own private, one-acre field, with views over an East Sussex valley and big, open skies for amazing sunsets. Couples looking for a romantic glamping break have this peaceful, rural spot at The Hidden Hillside entirely to themselves. A cute little retreat with an open-plan living and sleeping area kitted out reclaimed oak flooring, the Hogget Hut comes kitted out with a double bed (Egyptian cotton bedding provided) and an en-suite shower room with hot water (so relaxing after a day in the fresh air). And on cooler evenings, you can keep yourselves cosy around the woodburning stove. Compact it may be, but the natty kitchenette has everything you need, including a gas hob and Belfast sink. A few basics (olive oil, salt, pepper and tea) and all utensils are provided, so just remember to bring your favourite coffee to brew in the cafetière –oh, and a couple of bottles of prosecco to chill in the cool box. Outside, you can snuggle up around the firepit, with a large table for al fresco dining outside and deck chairs for chilling in the sun. Everything is off grid, and the lighting is solar powered – so please note this means no phone chargers and no wifi connection, hopefully giving you the chance to step away from tech for a while. While you can pick up supplies for knocking up meals in Battle (15 minutes’ drive), there’s a pub within strolling distance in Crowhurst (20 minutes’ walk) and other fabulous pubs and eateries roundabouts, so you’ll never starve if you don’t feel like cooking.

Local attractions

If you fancy getting lost in glorious countryside, Combe Valley Countryside Park (10 minutes’ walk), is adjacent to the farm, so you can hook up directly to numerous hiking and cycling paths through woodland valleys – plus you have the chance to spot buzzards and kestrels soaring overhead. The coast isn’t far away either. The expanses of Camber Sands (55 minutes’ drive) are backed by rolling dunes, great for walking off a fish-and-chip lunch in a seafront café. For a traditional seaside day out, head for Bexhill-on-Sea’s sandy beach (20 minutes), pop into the amusement arcades, and potter around the exhibitions or have a bite to eat at the Modernist-era De La Warr Pavilion. This area is called 1066 Country for good reason, so you might like to up your history credentials with a visit to Hastings Battlefield and Battle Abbey (both 15 minutes), or have a peek at the ruins of Hastings Castle (20 minutes), as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry.

The Hogget Hut shepherd's hut

Liked: The cleanliness and style of the space. Suitable facilities for us to feel like we were camping but more luxuriously. Beuatifully decorated and maintained. Lovely space to stay even when it rained and use a base to explore the local area. The contained shower and toilet were a lovely bonus! No cold middle of the might toilet walks.

Disliked: A lack of charging points seemed a problem to start with. But in the end having a dead phone allowed for the peace and quick we needed after a long year!
