  • Working farm site in rural Lancashire, with 63 acres and lovely views
  • A 10-minute drive to Blackburn; 40 minutes to Blackpool
  • Friendly atmosphere with play area and easy access to main roads
With 63 acres of farmland to its name and gorgeous views in all directions, Brocklehead Farm is an enticing prospect for people looking for a peaceful and scenic rural Lancashire spot that’s also handy for the amenities of everyday life. Settle in at this working farm and you’ll have views out towards the hills and mountains of the Lake District, Yorkshire and North Wales – on a clear day you’ll even be able to spot Blackpool in the distance. It’s got all the hallmarks of a classic countryside destination (including wildlife and farm animals) so it might be difficult to believe that Darwen’s only five minutes’ drive away and Blackburn about 10 minutes away. That location comes in handy not only for putting things like pubs, restaurants and shops within easy reach, but also for straightforward access to the local main roads for days out around town and country. You can get to Manchester or Liverpool with a drive of less than an hour from here, head to Blackpool for a day at the beach, or set your sights on exploring the Forest of Bowland and the Yorkshire Dales (or a bit of all of the above…) Meanwhile, a friendly community atmosphere reigns back at the farm – the owners live on site and are on hand to make sure everything is as it should be for enjoyable holidays. That setup includes providing a play area, easy parking places and a large shower block that’s got individual cubicles with a shower, basin and toilet. Dogs are welcome too, so you can bring your furry family member along on your break.

Liked: Site clean Beautiful views

Disliked: Check in process is all on line which we were not aware of. This was our last stop of a weeks touring during which we had little access to the internet. It was only by chance that I stumbled on the email with the registration form in it. Having completed that form I was not made aware that another email would be sent with our pitch number on it. When we arrived there was no staff to check in with. There was a door with a bell on it with a sign saying "ring for assistance". I rang, no assistance was forthcoming. Luckily I bumped into a very helpful couple who happened to keep their horses near by. They told me about the email with a pitch number in it. Whilst we were setting up, a young couple pulled up in their car and asked how they contacted the staff about access to one of the pods. We were able to tell them about the email which they too had not been aware of. I have nothing against technology or automated processes, however for them to work well you need to ensure prospective customers are aware that that is the process that is being used.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: We have returned from a weekend stay - our first time using a tourer caravan. It was fine generally. Pitch size was pretty good. Very slanted though - we hadn't bought levellers for the caravan at that point, so we were tilted to one side. The area is a large oval with caravans and motor homes to one side, hutches to the other side with a large field and small play area to the middle. The location of the play area was wonderful, as we could see our children at all times. We did not see or speak to a single staff member the whole weekend. It was numberplate recognition to get into the site, a text message on the day with the pitch number and some signs on the communal toilet door with the rules. This was OK for us, but I did find it slightly strange. We paid around £200 for Friday evening until 12pm Sunday morning for the pitch and electric hook up. It was nice for our first weekend tester trip but I probably wouldn't return

From the manager: Dear Mrs Yeardley, Thank you for your feedback on your review. Just to clarify, you paid a total of £87. Also, many people prefer the self-service approach over being assisted by staff. We are always available and operate a busy working farm. Regards, Brocklehead Caravan Park Team

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The site itself was lovely. We are family of 4 with a 2 and a 4 year old. The park in the middle of the site was great as we could always see the girls. Big grass are to run around on. The bathroom facilities were great, very clean. Ladies had 2 shower rooms (£1 to use for 5 mins) and 2 toilets. Washing up sink was outside. We had a lovely 3 night stay. A very nice site, well recommended.

Disliked: Only slight problem was we were on a sloping pitch - we are fairly new to caravaning so be prepared with your wood to level it out. Experienced campers won't have a problem.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovley open feel to site. Level campervan pitches arranged around the perimeter with a large green space (with a play area) in the middle. Toilets/showers well-appointed and clean - loved the Alice in Wonderland murals. A secure site with ANPR controlled gate. Emailed pitch number before arrival, making for contactless check-in. A short drive into Darwen town centre, with it’s interesting building, and shops, including supermarkets. Great walks over the downs to the tower, visible from the campsite, Easy access to Manchester area.

Disliked: Nothing

Shep-Pod camping pod (hot tub, adults only)

Liked: Could not fault a single thing! Attention to detail was amazing, cost was so reasonable. we have stayed similar places previously and paid double the price for much less. The thought put into the small touches really made our stay amazing.

Disliked: Not a single fault to pick!

Local attractions

Fancy stretching your legs? The Turton and Entwistle Reservoir (10 minutes’ drive) is probably the closest place for a walk in the woods, or you could head a little further afield for the many trails of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (35 minutes) or venture into the Yorkshire Dales from Skipton (45 minutes). Sticking to the outdoor attractions, you could also meet the animals at Smithills Open Farm or the Owl & Bird of Prey Sanctuary, admire the Singing Ringing Tree art installation or stroll around the Victorian gardens of Astley Hall (all about 20 minutes away). And of course there’s always the option of some sandy time at Blackpool beach (40 minutes)… For a bit of urban scenery, take a trip to Blackburn (10 minutes) for the museum, cathedral and ice arena, or set off for Manchester (45 minutes) and the Imperial War Museum North, National Football Museum and plenty of places to eat, drink and make merry.
