  • Adults-only site in Lancashire’s quiet Forest of Bowland fell country
  • A 15-minute drive to the Ribble Way and 40 minutes to Pen-y-Ghent
  • Grass pitches with spectacular views; pubs, shops and walks nearby
Can’t decide where you stand in the great debate about Yorkshire and Lancashire? Hedge your bets at Hill House Farm Camping, an adults-only site in the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which has land in each country. Look one way and you’ll see Lancashire’s Pendle Hill, look the other and you’ll spot the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Top that with a setting on meadow pitches at a working farm, and you’ve got a recipe for a peaceful stay amid glorious views, surrounded by sheep and cattle grazing in neighbouring fields. Should you feel the need to get active, Lancashire’s Easington Fell (15 minutes) and Yorkshire’s Pen-y-Ghent (40 minutes’ drive) are waiting to be conquered. All these untamed landscapes and yet you’re only a 15-minute drive from Clitheroe (firmly in Lancashire), which has a slew of restaurants, bars and takeaways as well as a huge supermarket for stocking up provisions. There’s a foodie pub (delicious Yorkshire pudding) a five-minute drive away, and if you are too tired after the day’s activities to move, you can order in pizza too. Basic amenities include portable toilets, recycling and charging facilities for your devices. The number of pitches is tightly limited, so you’ll never feel on top of your neighbours on the camping field.

Long-distance walkers, the Ribble Way awaits in Clitheroe (15 minutes), and if you like a bit of art with your hiking, you can look out for unicorns and other mythical creatures on the Pendle Sculpture Trail (20 minutes). Gisburn Forest (20 minutes) hides fab family cycling and some extremely challenging mountain biking trails. The kids can feed baby boar at Bowland Wild Boar Park (30 minutes) and dress up like medieval knights at Clitheroe Castle (15 minutes), or you can all jump on a steam train from Skipton (30 minutes) to chug cross the dales and fells to Carlisle. A museum and library are open for guided tours at Stonyhurst College (25 minutes), and Ribchester Roman Museum (30 minutes) exhibits remnants of military outfits as well as remains of defence walls.
