The view

  • Peaceful site in 11 acres of a working pine and deciduous woodland
  • Surrounded by walking trails and a 40-minute bus ride from Manchester
  • Pub, café, takeaway and shop within a 10-minute walk
Would you dearly love to spend some time in the woods? If you would, take a look at Lancashire’s Dearden Wood, a 10-minute walk from the little village of Edenfield and a 20-minute drive north of Bury. Guests here (four-legged ones welcome too) can start their rural rambles with explores of the 11 acres of mature pine and deciduous woodland around the site, then set their sights a little further afield on the footpaths and cycleways through the surrounds or from nearby Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall (both of which also have a fine collection of places for post-hike pints and food). If you'd rather stagger back to site for sustenance, there’s plenty of space for a barbie, and a washing-up area to get your kit clean afterwards. Edenfield’s a good source of eats too: fuel up for the day with a cooked breakfast or croissant from the café or bakery, pick up a takeaway or settle in for a cosy evening in the pub. Fingers crossed, such peaceful surrounds lead to deep slumbers – with that end in mind, the owners have kept facilities to the basics, simply installing a couple of toilets and a shower rather than kitting the place out with unnecessary distractions.

What customers say

Lovely, peaceful woodland site. Clean, friendly staff, great facilities & walks (waterfall!). Friday pizza nights a hit for atmosphere. Minor points: narrow road & occasional toilet code glitches. Tranquil, nature-lovers' gem.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (large)

Liked The facilities were excellent, the toilet/shower/kitchen block was clean and well maintained and the fact that dish cleaning stuff and hand towels/tea towels were provided was amazing. The pitches are a great size and we had plenty of room to pitch our tent and set up our gear. The surroundings were just beautiful and the walk down to the waterfall was fab, the dog thoroughly enjoyed it! The whole trip was a blast and we’d definitely visit again.

Disliked Other guests not closing the site gates, and the door to the toilet block being left open and lights left on was annoying! But I get that not everyone follows the rules and that’s not the fault of the owners as the signs are all there… some people are just lazy and inconsiderate. We were a little frustrated at initially being told we had to buy our firewood from the campsite, only to be told on the day of arrival that their wood was still drying so we had to buy our own. Which we were happy to do, but a bit more notice would have been appreciated.

From the manager: Thank you for your review! Lovely to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us 😊

It is frustrating that people don't close the gates/doors and switch lights off (we feel the same frustration! 🤣) Apologies about the wood, we have struggled to get ours dry in time for the season - the joys of the British winters!

Hopefully see you again soon!

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (large)

Liked Secluded site, yet close to the shops, pubs and restaurants. Flat pitches. Fire pit provided. Quiet. Shelter/den with wooden log seats and fire pit for when it's raining. Shower and toilet block was clean. Hand soap and toilet roll provided. Fridge, kettle and toaster available. Flexible check-in time. Close to Edenfield waterfall which is definitely worth a visit.

Disliked Be aware that there is a man-made bee hive very close to the tent pitches that attracts a lot of bees and wasps.

Non-electric hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked Great little site surrounded by trees. Great for families with young children. Some beautiful walks right on the door step. Make sure you walk down to the waterfall, less than 10 mins down the path.

Disliked Not a dislike at all but just a note to not trust your sat nav on the site location. Apple Maps dropped me in completely the wrong location.

Liked Really enjoyed my stay here.

Its a very small campsite, with around 10/11 pitches - which suited me perfectly.

I felt very comfortable staying here as a solo traveller.

Facilties were great.

When I arrived, it took a little time to find out which was my assigned pitch. I understand the site is ran as a not-for-profit. I think it would be easy to automate this with a text or email to the customer prior to arrival. Especially as there didn't seem to be a member of staff on site.

Overall I loved the setting and how peaceful it was.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked A fantastic campsite with excellent facilities and incredibly friendly owners! They even texted us ahead of our arrival to let us know they’d be making wood-fired pizzas that evening, in case we wanted to order, and invited us to a small community event they were hosting. I asked the owner if they had any firewood for purchase — unfortunately, they had run out — but he kindly went out of his way to find some for me free of charge, which was such a thoughtful gesture!

My girlfriend and I only stayed for one night, but we wished we could have stayed longer. We enjoyed it so much that we’ve already booked to come back this August!

close to the nearest pub and some great walking locally is also a great plus !

Liked Gorgeous site, very pretty location and kept clean and tidy.
Owners hold a homemade pizza night in for days which was delicious and a great break from cooking.

Disliked Would’ve loved to know what was around, or had some guidance on recommended spots nearby for daytime trips out as we weren’t familiar with the area.

Local attractions

Walks in these surrounds are fab, but they're not the only way to get out and about. Those who like to take it all in on two wheels may like to mount their mountain bikes for the short (but steep) ride to Rossendale Moor to get their kicks on the quarry trails. Rossendale (10 minutes' drive) is also the place for climbing walls, laser tag and a roller rink at the Adrenaline Centre. Something a little less hair raising? Take it easy on the East Lancashire Railway, which rides through Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall (both 10 minutes' drive) as it puffs its way around the Irwell Valley. Check out their schedule for details of special journeys including ale rail, dino-themed days, photography courses and the like. More of an appetite for all things that move? Take in buses, trams and a vintage fire engine at Bury Transport Museum (20 minutes) – as a bonus, it's completely free to visit. If you need a reminder of urban life, flag down a bus in the village for the 40-minute journey to Manchester’s museums, shops and theatres. Rather stick to the rural stuff, ta? Meet the menagerie at Cronkshaw Fold Farm (15 minutes' drive) or Animal Quackers (20 minutes), or saddle up for a day out on horseback from the riding centre in Holcombe (15 minutes).
