Cabin is located on this farm in a beautiful valley
View of whicham valley where the cabin is located

  • Adults-only cabin in a valley just outside of the Lake District
  • A five-minute drive to Silecroft beach; located under Black Combe fell
  • Hike directly to fells and the Cumbria Coastal Way; shops nearby
Functional simplicity mixed with comfort and style… that sums up this glamping cabin based just outside of the Lake District National Park. Dog Crag Cabin is a wise base for active breaks: beaches, lakes and other south Lake District landscapes are all easy to access. So, where exactly is this cabin? On a former farm in a valley in southwest Cumbria, it’s just four miles from Millom and a five- minute drive from Silecroft Beach in the south of the national park. The Cumbria Coastal Way, which snakes its way along the Lake District coast, is nearby and can be accessed from a footpath direct from the farm. That’s coastal hikes on your itinerary already. Horse riding treks might feature too – there’s a trekking centre five minutes’ drive away. There are more hikes out onto fells or you might want to visit the local golf course (10 minutes’ drive) and go fishing in Haverigg (10 minute). Foodies will be happy to find shops and pubs within five to 10 minutes’ drive of the site too. The cabin is actually a barn conversion – through the arched door, there’s a well-designed, modern and open-plan timber interior, splendidly lit and tastefully decorated with a four-poster bed. Ensuite facilities, which include a shower, and kitchen facilities are included. Up to two pets are welcome, as are any couples or solo travellers. Whoever you bring, don’t forget to climb the often-forgotten Wainwright’s Black Combe (five minutes’ drive), which has views over the Irish Sea and the Isle of Man.

Liked: Loved the weather and the views, lovely little place to stay, so quiet and relaxing really enjoyed it

Disliked: No tv 😂

From the manager: Thanks for the review and for staying, you definitely hit the weather jackpot! You can use the wfi to stream TV if you bring you own lap top or screen, the wifi is pretty good with unlimited data.We can't get normal TV due to the signal being blocked by Dog Crag above the property.

Cabin

Liked: No TV which wasn’t a bad thing, great WiFI but stopped working on my last night.

Disliked: Bring your own oven and frying pan, and shower mat! Oh and certainly not Pensioner friendly!! Inadequate Kitchen facilities to say the least, just dreadful, One Tefal Induction hob to cook on. 8” Fry pan to cook your fulll English on😓 (Tefal ih2108 ) Health and safety: Microwave oven 300mm above Induction hob! Shower: no shower mat or safety rail, very very slippy when showering , nearly slipped and broke my neck managed to stay upright but ended up pulling muscles in my side trying to stay upright (I’m 70) . One of the two Towels smelt terrible, hadn’t been dried properly! towels never changed during my stay, no bedding change or bin emptied either, i’d bought black refuse bags and resorted to disposing them daily where i could find a bin in Haverigg. In fact the apartment was not visited once by the host or their stjaff during the four night I stayed. Made it quite plain they could not care less about me their paying guest? Don’t let the misleading photos fool you or reviews, no access to anywhere on the premises, you have a half metre barrier from the front door and that’s your bit. No interaction with anyone or anything on the premises. Uncared for containers outside the cabin, I may picked the weeds out before I leave. Host was totally absent throughout my stay, inhospitable to a fault , their front door 10 yards from the cabin door? Miles from anywhere, go well stocked up. Nigh on 6 miles to a shop.

From the manager: Unfortunately this guest did not seem to have read the description of the accommodation. I offered him a refund instead of staying as on arriving he seemed to think he could put up an outside kitchen and fire in a field despite this being in the terms as not allowed. We usually get good reviews for friendly service, he did not contact me for any help during the stay. The cabin is self catering accommodation, we don't do a daily maid service to change the bed and towels and bins, we were unable to do a final inspection of the cabin and add the bath mat and do out checks before the stay as he turned up 2 hours early and let himself in. Please refer to our other reviews for the majority view. I've been in business for 10 years and have never had a guest this rude and frankly a bit sinister. Future guests - please read our other reviews. Our guests are fantastic and we are always happy to take comments or try to help with issues but I am not up for intimidation as was the case here.

Fantastic. Clean and friendly.

Cabin

Liked: Loved everything about the cabin and the area. Cabin was spotless. No TV which wasn't a bad thing. Great walks within minutes of the cabin. 5 minutes in the car to Silecroft beach. Although I preferred to drive a extra 5 mins to Haverigg. Local pub serving great food from 10am. A wonderful relaxing break. Louise was a wonderful host. Making sure I had everything I needed for a enjoyable stay. I will definitely be back.

Disliked: Sleeping. Knocked out with all the walks and fresh air.

Cabin

Liked: Absolutely stunning. Can’t rate the cabin or the host highly enough. Everything was so clean on arrival and we had everything we could need. About 45 min from Bowness on Windermere and an hour from Scaffel Pike starting point (both of which we recommend!). Was concerned about staying a bit further away from the lakes but it ended up being the best decision as the drives took us through gorgeous scenery and was much nicer having a remote base to escape to. Totally perfect. Thank you!!

Cabin

Liked: Absolutely loved the feel of the place! So secluded and quiet but close enough to go into Millom the nearest town. Although we didn’t see the owners personally you could just tell they were lovely people a really well looked after site, gorgeous animals too! Only rated 1 star on child friendliness as it was an over 18s only lodge. Would definitely stay again!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Liked: This converted barn cabin has everything you need. It really is beautiful. Louise was super friendly and very helpful with advice on where to go. The beach is close, and accessible and very quiet. I'd recommend going up the hill behind the property, its takes no time to get to see views to die for. Would definitely recommend, and would love to return

Local attractions

If you’re planning to spend most of your time outdoors, good news – Grizedale Forest (55 minutes’ drive) is carved out with cycling and mountain biking trails and there are obstacle courses and zipwires slung between the treetops for the daring types. Brockhole on Windermere (55 minutes) has more on that front, especially for budding kayakers and archers. As for spots frequented by historic figures, Wordsworth Grasmere (an hour) was once occupied by poet Wordsworth and novelist Beatrix Potter lived at the Hill Top Beatrix Potter House (50 minutes) and Yew Tree Farm (35 minutes). The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (55 minutes) explores her tales in more detail. Up next, more historical places? Ambleside Roman Fort (50 minutes), Sizergh (55 minutes) or Muncaster Castle (20 minutes), perhaps? Steam train trips through a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Co.Ltd (25 minutes) or gliding across Coniston Water on a steam-powered Victorian yacht run by the National Trust’s Steam Yacht Gondola (35 minutes)? Other options for days out include the Lakes Aquarium (45 minutes), Kendal’s art galleries and museums (an hour) or Lakeland Maze Farm Park (55 minutes).
