Ullswater view

  • Wild camping with spectacular views of Ullswater in the Lake District
  • Pooley Bridge five minutes’ drive, and Lowther Castle 20 minutes
  • Spring water and portable toilets on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk
When it comes to the Lake District, there are many spectacular views, but the one from Ullswater View Campsite is right up there as a serious contender for a prize. The name gives it away somewhat, as this off-grid, wild camping site does indeed have spectacular views over Ullswater Lake and the surrounding forested mountains. At 20 minutes’ drive from the shops of Penrith in Cumbria, this is a spot to really get back to basics; portable toilets, rubbish bins and water from a natural spring are the only facilities you’ll find on site – so at this juncture please note that means no showers and no electricity. Part of the mown camping field is on an incline (all the better to admire those lake views), and due to the angle of the entrance gateway, you’ll need to drive up the lane and turn around before entering the site. The track leading to the pitches is not accessible to low-slung cars either. Having said all that, the site does have a wonderful setting, it’s dog-friendly (as long as your four-legged pal is kept on a lead), and it’s 10 minutes’ scenic walk from a cosy pub serving good food and beer. Staying here also puts you a handy five minutes’ drive from all the sporting action on Ullswater itself. There are firepits for hire and logs for sale on site if you'd like to spend the eve around a fire.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location and view was great, and campsite was spacious. A text from Sophie was perfect to guide us on how to get to camp, and she also introduced herself so I knew we could contact her mobile if we had any issues.

Disliked: Unfortunately a large group came later in the evening and played loud music right next to our tent. I understand that this can’t be controlled easily but it did affect our stay. Also, only two portable toilets shared by men and women. They didn’t flush easily and certainly smelt!

Liked: We stayed here for 1 night and it was absolutely fab, amazing views from the site and lovely family running it! BBQs were great on the site. A quick walk down the road to the pub for a drink or a 10 minute walk down to the lake. Overall lovely.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful location overlooking Ullswater, fairly flat decent sized field with good pitches, however they are probably the only plus sides.

Disliked: Site was easily accessible however nobody there to greet when we drove on which was fine as we managed to find a pitch easily enough but had no idea how to access fire pits/logs as advertised and unable to locate any bins for rubbish. Site was advertised as family friendly and couples only. Two large groups of young lads there which we were unfortunate enough to camp between and majority of site was younger people who were not quiet until past midnight. One group was not too bad, however the other consisted of swearing, smoking cannabis, loud shouting, playing loud music until after midnight, shouting at other groups. Toilets were disgusting, looked like as though they had not been cleaned in a while and toilet roll ran out around midday Saturday and had still not been replaced by Sunday afternoon when we left. Would not recommend for families with young children.

From the manager: Makes me laugh this one you messaged about the groups of lads so I came down to speak to you and them to which you said oh no, actually they’re all alright. They’ve been playing football with my kids and then once you’ve left you get behind your keyboard like a little keyboard warrior .you should perhaps be more concerned about your own affairs it’s hypocritical an irresponsible if you’re letting your kids play with people you accuse to be smoking drugs if you stuggled to locate the large white bins I’m astonished you even found the site or even passed your driving test in the first place. Please never come back again I really do not need B*** S*** like this

Local attractions

Drive down to Pooley Bridge (five minutes by car) at the head of Ullswater for yomps along the Ullswater Way encircling the lake. Father south, stop off at the National Trust car park (10 minutes) and walk up to the impressive Aira Force Waterfall, inspiration for the poem ‘The Somnambulist’ by William Wordsworth, written in 1833. Experienced hikers may care to drive to Patterdale (15 minutes) and clamber up Helvellyn for spectacular Lake District views, while others may settle for a stately voyage around Ullswater aboard the historic steamboat ‘Lady of the Lake’ from Glenridding (15 minutes), itself a pretty lakeside village with tea rooms and souvenir shops. Lowther Castle and Gardens (20 minutes) has imposing and photogenic ruins of a massive mansion as well as parterres and parkland to wander, or you can buy marmalade – reputed to be the best in the world – at Dalemain Historic Mansion and Gardens. If you hit a rainy day, catch a film at Rheged (both 10 minutes).
