  • Small, basic adults-only site two miles from Windermere
  • Well placed for cycle paths and public transport; pub five mins' walk
  • Firepit provided for each pitch; wood available to buy on site
Backpacking the Dales Way? Stopping off en route to Scotland? Exploring as many of the Lake District’s fells and lakes as you can? Whatever your reason for heading to Cumbria, you can expect a warm welcome from the owners at Ings Kippers Campsite. This is a small adults-only basic site with a handful of pitches in the grounds of a private house, so you won’t find any large groups, families or dogs running about here. It’s a peaceful place that’s all geared up for backpackers, cyclists, bike-packers, solo campers and couples in search of space to relax; after 10pm all should be pretty quiet (other than perhaps the crackle of the logs in the firepit or the gentle swish of a car passing in the distance…) Cars are kept away from the pitches too, so you’ll start your stay by walking your gear a short distance along a grassy path between the Christmas trees on the steep Lakeland hillside to find your choice of level grass pitch. Compact tents (4-person maximum), light gear and strong tent pegs are the key items to pack here for the best experience. Each one has a firepit (with wood available to buy on site) and a great view out over the local fells, and you're welcome to light off-ground barbecues for an alfresco dinner. (Although you may like to note the award-wining pub and microbrewery five minutes’ walk away…) Free phone charging and ice-pack freezing are available at the house, and guests also have access to clean toilets and hot showers. Those hot showers will certainly be welcome after long days of adventures: wild swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking are all on the menu nearby, and there are lots of safe bike paths in the surrounding areas. Windermere is only two miles away from Ings Kippers, and lots of other top Lake District spots are within easy reach too – Ambleside, Coniston and Great Langdale among them. The main road is only about 100 metres from the site, and regular public transport services run nearby for sustainable travels.

Quiet, adult-only campsite with private, wooded pitches. Great facilities (charging lockers, outdoor shower, fire pits). Close to Lake District, local pub, shop & bus. Some road noise & a hill walk to pitches. Excellent value & thoughtful touches.

Small hillside non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Good location, great views, excellent though fairly basic facilities, spotlessly clean, friendly welcome, nice pitches all for 1-2 adults, wood available for fires, Pret, shop and pub (good beers, typical pub food) 2 minutes walk. On regular bus route to Windermere and Kendal.

Disliked Only problem is traffic noise. Main road is 200 meters away and quite busy. Otherwise, perfect.

Small hillside non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Loved this place - there are 12 pitches in total, each one set in it's own secluded pitch, with trees around it. The staff are super helpful and friendly, there is recycling, and great facilities for washing/cleaning etc - the free outside shower is great , you can look at the sky while taking a shower - the ones inside are only 20p. There is a compost toilet and regular one -lots of good eco options here. They also do logs for a fire if you want. It's well located, for buses across the lake district, and there's a great pub over the road (good food and it's own brewery). No cars on the site (parking at the bottom), and a nice cosy atmosphere. It's up a hill, with great views from the top - highly recommended. - there's even a camp library if you want to borrow a book to read, oh and secure lock up cupboards for charging phones - clearly a lot of thought and effort has gone into making this place what it is, which is quite special - would definitely come again

Disliked really minor point - it's near a quite busy road, more busy on the weekends and calms down at night - not a major problem, more of a background noise, but worth being aware of

Small hillside non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The facilities at Ings Kippers are fantastic!! Great little features at the site like the charging lockers, freezer for ice blocks and the trolley to transport your tent etc to the pitch. The outdoor shower is a great little bonus, perfect on a hot weekend like we’ve just had! The owners of the site were very friendly and attentive. We loved how every pitch had its own little quirks. The cat is really friendly too.

Disliked A bit of road noise but not too intrusive.

Small hillside non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I liked pretty much everything about it!
Lovely kept property and surroundings as you arrive, parking at the bottom of the hill clearly marked and safe.
Great little land on the hills. Views were amazing, really clean and sufficient amenities there. Very kind owner Malcolm.
Fire pit on each pitch which were surprisingly level considering you are on a large hill. He's put in lovely little touches like free to use charging stations, sheltered hot shower, a 'gear cart ' to help with your gear up the hill and a free to use freezer for ice packs, perfect. Each station, pitch and rubbish bins etc all had a clear notice on to keep everything right and tidy.
As a first time solo camper I had only research and words from friends about the cost of pitching up like this, and Ings kippers hill top camp site are really well priced, you get alot for your money in all honesty.
They've really thought about it all alot, having drinking water stations dotted over the site including right at the top of the hill, the pitch I chose when arrived. A camp library cabinet. There were clearly marked bins available at the top and bottom of the hill even a little washing up water station aswell!
The site was well looked after, clean and friendly.
Fully recommended site for solo travellers, couples, friends and even if you wanted to bring your child.

Small hillside non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked beautiful location, on a good bus route. nice private pitches and the barbecue/ fire pit laid on was a nice touch. very friendly and helpful owners!

Disliked it’s a fairly steep walk from the car/ shower up to the top pitches- not normally an issue but difficult to pitch up/down in the rain.

Local attractions

You can see the Old Man of Coniston from the pitches on a clear day… and if that whets your appetite for scenic outdoor pursuits, you’ve come to the right place. Wainwright baggers can easily get to Kentmere Horseshoe and the other Far Eastern Fells from Ings Kippers, and it’s an easy two-mile journey to the shores of Windermere for wild swims, watersports or waterside walks (or maybe a leisurely lake cruise if you need a little rest…) This area is well-known for its links with Beatrix Potter too – if you’d like to find out more about the author behind the classic children’s books, take a trip to The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (10 minutes’ drive), and then visit her former home at Hill Top (half an hour). It’s worth stopping by in Kendal (15 minutes) too – it’s home to a castle, a lively arts scene and lots of shops and places to eat. For a real taste of the local area, head to Staveley (five minutes) and a tour of the Hawkshead Brewery (preceded by a walk up Reston Scar if you feel the need to earn that pint…)
