  • Small-scale Lake District campsite with direct access to the fells
  • A mile and a half from Bampton; Ullswater 20 minutes’ drive
  • Surrounded by Herdwick sheep; views over Haweswater Reservoir
Low Scarside is a small, simple and scenic site located in a paddock around a mile and a half from the pretty village of Bampton. This rural spot is surrounded by Lake District countryside and has excellent access to nearby fells, lakes and trails, including the Knipe Scar footpath which starts just metres from the site gates. The main pitching area here is in a secluded paddock 50 metres from the car park, with easy access to the common land overlooking Bampton. Parking is roughly 100 metres away from the pitches, and simple facilities like a portable toilet and water tap are supplied. Barbecues are also permitted here. To pick up supplies, you might want to head half a mile down the road to the local shop or drive into Shap (10 minutes), a small town by the M6 where there is a well-stocked supermarket. Lots of great pubs, cafés and restaurants can be found throughout the Lowther Valley, but your hosts particularly recommend a community pub with great beer and food five minutes' drive away in Bampton and the small village of Askham (15 minutes' drive), next to the historic grounds of Lowther Castle and Gardens.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Throughly enjoyed staying here. The owner Nigel and his family were all extremely friendly and so helpful, immediately offering us a cup of tea and information on the area and what it had to offer. The facilities were basic but the views more than made up for this. Would 100% would stay again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved this cute little campsite. The owner came up to us as we arrived. A little later than we had hoped at 9:30 pm. He greeted us and showed us where we could find things. He offered us some tea, which was just such a nice gesture. Especially since I was very tired and had a sore throat. He brought it up to us as we where pitching our tent. It made us feel very welcome. Facilities are simple as stated on the description. Very neat camping, lovely soft, well kept grass. We loved it.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Site owner Nigel was really helpful. Lovely field - small but with just what you needed for a night of back to basics camping in a lovely setting. The toilet was well stocked with toilet roll, sanitiser and a mirror :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Natalie and Nigel were both very welcoming and helpful, and their paddock is perfectly positioned for a quick overnight stop whilst journeying south as we did, or I imagine would be a great base for further exploring the lakes. The pub at Bampton is great (book ahead for food) and there are other good options nearby in Askham. Would absolutely recommend for a quiet and peaceful camp with gorgeous views.
