Campervan pitch

  • Remote Cumbria woodland retreat 20 minutes' drive from Penrith
  • A 15-minute drive from Brougham Castle and 20 minutes from Ullswater
  • Communal firepit on site; half-hour walk to village pub
Picturing yourself whiling away a few days in a secluded forested hideaway? Howdy Glamping and Campsite is a peaceful site where you can do just that. Since being planted around 20 years ago, this gorgeous woodland has become a haven for all sorts of wildlife – and now guests can spend the night here in order to appreciate this special place at their leisure at all times of day. The amenities available here vary depending on the type of accommodation you opt for, but all guests have access to toilet and shower facilities (a two-minute walk away from the pitches). There's also a communal firepit for evenings out in the open air with family and friends. Keen walkers have several trails to explore locally, along with a whole network of paths lacing the hills in Lake District National Park (15 minutes’ drive) and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour). The site is on the edge of Great Strickland, the centre of which can be reached via a five-minute drive, or a half-hour walk along a country lane or through the fields. The village is home to a pub (with a beer garden) that serves traditional food, real ales and a selection of gins. This establishment claims to be the friendliest pub in the Eden Valley, so make sure to go down and experience their warm hospitality for yourself. For more drinking and dining options (plus shops and supermarkets), head to the market town of Penrith (20 minutes).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Everything! Lovely spot!
Only a 20 minute drive to pooley bridge and ullswater, such a beautiful area.
Had so many little extras just that made my stay even better! Loved the little club house! With a sink, fridge and phone charging point, was super useful to have the use of a microwave too.
A lovely little walk to the local pub, with some friendly cows on the way!!
Will 100% be returning.
Thank you for making my first solo camp so enjoyable 💖

Liked Facilities where ok

Disliked Only one shower, stole leads tried to contact which signal isn't the best tried to ring to use dryer so used it and was going to leave a donation but went back to find leads and towels stolen messaged and they where placed back with a note to say we owed £2. I was going to leave a donation and i tried to contact but couldn't get through to pinch people's belongings isn't the best plus to top it off only 2 leads came back which we have 3 dogs they where £16 a lead so I'm owed more than the £2 I think it's disgusting.
The camping field is very small

From the manager: What a strange strange woman .. So happy to hear you are not returning .
Why anyone would use a dryer that’s not for public use to dry dog leads and towels is beyond me in the first place … but to then accuse the owners of stealing them is quite another .
Thank goodness 99% of our guests are a joy to host ! 🌿💚🌿

Lovely hosts, quiet campsite with good facilities for rustic site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Everything: the welcome, the campsite, it's quiet location and the facilities. Tom & Andri just the best. We will be back :)

Disliked Waze app took me to the wrong farm but that might've been the address from PitchUp. Quick call to Tom who said use Google maps. Got there no problem. And clear instructions where to pitch.

Great location for a journey to and from Scotland from the south.

Non-electric hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked Very convenient overnight stop off enroute to Scotland. We were in a camper on the hard standing which was level. Enjoyed walking around the glamping site- very quirky

Disliked Quite a long walk to the toilets and shower from the campsite, all looking a bit ‘end of season’ tired.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I loved how cosy this little campsite was, it was so peaceful, the owner came to welcome us and made my child feel welcome telling her where she could go to play etc, we couldn’t believe how much facilities there was for the price, a full utility room which we didn’t eclectic as we’ve paid more more for just a Porta-loo on site, the location was beautiful and not far from the Lake District, there was no light pollution, it was tidy and peaceful. We will 1000% be back but for longer next time as we loved it so much, our favourite camp to date!

Disliked There was nothing to dislike

From the manager: What a delightful review and I was away during your stay so that’s great to hear ! my hubby Tom can take all the credit ! 💚🌿💚🌿great to hear you’ll be back xxx

Non-electric hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked Stunning and unique place, Ive never quite seen a campsite like it. Nice and quiet. The glamping accomodation in the woods was really special, although I took the campervan option. A warm welcome by Andri, Tom and their dogs! Farmhouse kitchen offered toilets, shower, washing up facilities, a washing machine, microwave and the use of a fridge freezer. Plenty of wood to buy and firepits. Far too many sites these days are missing a trick by not using firepits and by not allowing fires. Its what campings all about. Very eco friendly with recycling bins. Tent field is pretty, level and surrounded by trees and an open field next door. Stunning sunsets. Penrith, Ullswater and plenty of heritage sites nearby. I'll be back with Alfie for sure. Pity I cant upload the photographs as Pitch Up websute says they are too small? 🙂‍↕️

From the manager: Wonderful to hear ! Thank you !!♥️🙏🙏🙏🌿💚🌿

Local attractions

The ruins of 13th-century Brougham Castle (15 minutes’ drive) occupy a pretty spot on the banks of the River Eamont and have far-reaching views of the Eden Valley. An elegant and imposing façade is all that remains of Lowther Castle (15 minutes), built in the early 1800s. The gardens here include landscaped areas, wildflower meadows and woodland, as well as an adventure playground. Independent shops and cafés line the cobbled streets of the historic town of Penrith (20 minutes). The remains of a medieval fortress overlook Castle Park, where you can stroll among rose gardens or have a picnic on the lawn while the children let off some steam in the playground. Ullswater (20 minutes) is the second-largest lake in the Lake District. Explore its wooded banks on foot (there’s a spectacular trail following the eastern shore, from Howtown to Glenridding), hop on a cruise or hire a canoe or paddleboard from any of the waterfront outfits.
