  • Quiet and secluded site with spectacular views of the Lake District
  • Five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake; 15 to Keswick, Cockermouth
  • Spa next door; five minutes' walk to the Lake District Wildlife Park
Could trips to Cumbria get any more spectacular than at this serene site…? Answers on a postcard please to Coalbeck Caravan Park… in a central setting for touring the Lake District and nearby coastline, this haven has views of the region’s woods, fields and hills from its spacious grounds. Getting you to linger a little longer before heading out for explores, the spacious pitches at Coalbeck Caravan Park are prime for spotting creatures like rare red squirrels among the pretty planters, and are a suntrap when the rays come out too. But if rain’s threatening? A spa next door to the site means you can book in for a treatment (or three…?). Back outdoors, the site’s a five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake – one of the only bodies of water in the region with no settlements around it – so it’s got a peaceful vibe yet is close enough to many of the main sights in the northern part of the lakes. Case in point: it’s around a 15-minute drive to historic towns like Keswick and Cockermouth and about a half an hour to the coast. If you’re looking for leisure without having to get behind the wheel, Lake District Wildlife Park’s 24 acres of land home to more than 100 animals is a five-minute walk away. You’ll also need to ditch the car to visit The Lakes Distillery: this artisan gin, whisky and vodka producing place a 25-minute stroll from the park has tastings, tours and a small shop where you can wander off with some of its wares.

What customers say

Lovely, quiet spot. Praised for spotless facilities, especially allocated loos per pitch. Friendly owner Sid and great Lake District base. Single shower for touring pitches seldom an issue. Ideal for a tranquil, well-kept getaway.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked We loved the location and the peace and tranquility of this site. We also liked that it was a smaller site. Sid was lovely and very helpful and accommodating. There is a bus stop 2 mins walk from the site where the X4 takes you straight into Keswick every hour. The site is within easy walking distance of the lake. All pitches are hard standing with electric. Each pitch has its own dedicated toilet in the block.

Disliked Whilst it was never a problem for us, maybe could with more showers.

Liked Very quiet and well managed site, lovely people and nice touch to have your own loo. The one shower for the 5 pitches was fine and at no extra cost. We would definately go back 😀

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Sid was an absolutely amazing host, he was so welcoming and accommodating and greeted us the next morning after our late arrival the night prior, we loved having a chat with him when we passed, very informative such a lovely guy! Great pitches, kept tidy and grounds maintained, bathroom block was very clean. Was very peaceful even with the sound of gibbons and eagles in the background from the Wildlife park next door, such a great place.

Disliked Only one shower so busy times might be a wait to use it but own toilet makes up for it!

Recommend to friends Visit again

Disappointing, but the weather and scenery more than compensated.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Peaceful location convenient to Keswick and lakes.
Hotel/bar within walking distance.

Disliked Small, cramped pitch.
Only one shared shower with no ventilation.
Mixed male/female toilets.
Drinking water only available at the shower block.
Screeching of animals in the nearby wildlife sanctuary especially in the mornings.
No footpath on road making walk to bar/restaurant dangerous.

Local attractions

For ambles around art galleries and wanders in Wordsworth House and Garden, Keswick is eight miles away. Cockermouth, on the other hand, about the same distance to the south east, is just the place for meandering through medieval and Georgian alleyways under castle walls. Or for classic Lake District outdoorsy options instead, Derwentwater's walking and cycling circuit (set aside about half a day to complete if strolling) takes half an hour to reach in the car. To break up traipsing around the tarns inland, Solway Coast Area of Natural Beauty is 40 minutes by car, while underground explores at Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale are 45 minutes away. If you fancy staying above ground and sauntering southwards, Lake Ullswater steamer cruises are also 45 minutes from the park and Lake Windermere is the place to waterski (an hour and five minutes away from Coalbeck Caravan Park). To scale one of the region’s highest peaks, Scafell Pike takes an hour and 15 minutes to reach.
