Liked: The area is beautiful The farm was great- Shetland ponies, cows and puppies to watch. Facilities were good and clean and very well kept. The owners were friendly as were other campers. Lovely and quiet. Close to the walks we wanted to do. We had a brilliant stay

Disliked: Nothing. It was all just perfect

Non-electric grass tent pitch (family)

Liked: Plenty of space to pitch up. Friendly hosts. Good hot showers. Pub only 5 minutes walk away that serves cask ale and good food.

Disliked: Only 1 toilet available to campers in the shower block. Access was via a sloped hill that was very muddy and slippery due to the torrential rain. Would benefit from a gravel path similar to the one where the caravans were sited.

Shepherd's Hideaway camping pod

Liked: The pod we stayed in was excellent we had everything we needed the staff had thought this through perfectly from cups , plates cutlery, towels , kettle , fridge with milk and water inside , tea , coffee pods for the machine we even had a little radio system in place , the double bed was so comfortable and all made up for us on arrival, the Pod was so warm and insulated, there was 4 electric sockets , proper lighting and also a small lamp , we did take a gazebo to put outside over the picnic table which we found very useful because of the weather although the wind did eventually blow to much so we did have to take down the day before leaving, there was 2 chairs outside on the decking with a BBQ plus the picnic table ,

Disliked: Although plenty of showers for tents and camping these wasn’t very warm has there in a old rustic barn they was just to cold to shower , there was a couple of others in a modern unit near to the touring pitch which I believe was much better it had rained quite a lot so all the camping fields was very muddy wellies was a must and would recommend you take a pair whatever time off year you go just incase . Also a torch is required not much lighting around the camping field so does get very dark at night

Fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The site itself was lovely & we loved being in amongst the horses & cows & alpacas & of course the puppies !

Disliked: There only being 2 toilets & showers, especially when other campers were in there for hours as they had been arguing with their families it wasn’t fair on the rest of us! It wasn’t Howbeck lodge fault that there were some dirty horrible people camping who always left the toilets in a mess & we had to constantly clean & squeegee the toilet/showers out as they were swimming in water! But more than 2 maybe a good upgrade

Fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The location was fantastic and the pitch was level and well serviced. On a working farm so it was great to have the animals around. The facilities were clean and well maintained. Would recommend.

Disliked: Only 2 toilet/shower blocks which were constantly engaged as the campers, who should have been using their own facilities, used them. Need to have a code on the door so only the people they were meant for could use them.

Local attractions

If you're looking to spend some time by the water, Bassenthwaite Lake (20 minutes' drive) will surely be on your list. This most northerly lake in the national park is very quiet, with few towns and villages around its shores. Head here for walks along the path that runs along the western shore, or stick around to discover the animals on display just to the north of the lake at the Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes). It's a short drive to other top attractions too, the likes of which include historic Dalemain House (20 minutes), the Lakes Distillery (20 minutes), mountain peaks like Helvellyn (30 minutes) or Skiddaw (35 minutes) and the far-famed Derwent Pencil Museum, where you can learn all about graphite. Birdoswald Roman Fort, part of Hadrian’s Wall, can be reached by road in 50 minutes as well. Cumbrian life isn't all about the fells and lakes, though: you can take yourself off to Carlisle (30 minutes) for a more urban day out at the castle, cathedral and Tullie House museum, or you could get to Cumbria's gorgeous coastline in about 35 minutes for days out on the sand.
