  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

What customers say

Nice, quiet spot with great views and staff who go the extra mile. Showers and shop get shout-outs. Good for exploring, though busy times can mean pitch and shower snags. Good value and chilled vibes.

Electric optional grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked A very peaceful site with excellent facilities - the toilets and showers are the best we have seen. The couple who welcomed us to the site could not have been more friendly and helpful. The little shop is cool and we enjoyed our morning fresh croissants.

Lodge (hot tub)

Liked Fantastic quaint setting. Nice and quiet tucked away from some of the tourism now visible in some parts of The Lakes. We were blessed with great weather and sitting out under the stars with a bbq and fire pit was pure bliss
Easy reach of key sites and places to visit
The lodge had everything we needed pretty much
Hot tub is a wood burner one and we were provided with everything we needed for that too.
Toilets and shower in the separate block a very short walk away were kept clean
Shop onsite had necessary basics and Louise who was in there very friendly and helpful

Disliked The showers could do with some matting down or better drainage. If you leave your shoes in the cubicle with you they will get wet!
Keep an eye on the hot tub temperature it was actually too hot to stay in for too long. Almost worth firing it up then letting it cool down a bit.

Liked Stayed in Fox’s Den -really cute ! Location was great for accessing the Southern Lake District , we had everything we needed for a couple of days, great that bbqs and fire pits are encouraged Beautiful place to relax with lovely views The showers and loo were well appointed and clean The shop was handy for forgotten essentials- would highly recommend !Communication and self check in was great

Disliked The weather was shocking so couldn’t take full advantage of the outside facilities It would be really handy to have a couple of hooks in the cabin to hang up coats

Lodge

Liked The peace and lack of light pollution which made the sky beautiful at night. Very clean facilities and super lovely staff.

Disliked We had horrible weather (not their fault). We had cold showers for 2 mornings and the tumble dryer was out of order which wasn't fun and couldn't dry anything. Also some dogs off lead which isn't good when you have a nervous dog. However, I didn't mention any of this at the time. They may have been able to help.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
