  • Family-run site with scenic views across farmland and fells
  • A 15-minute drive to the city of Carlisle and 30 to the Lake District
  • Supermarkets, restaurants and a swimming pool a 25-minute walk away
For views of fells, farmland and fields make Camping at Cardewlees your next base for a break – this family-run site looks out over splendid Lake District scenery including Carrock Flat Top, High Pike and Skiddaw… Whether you plan on having hardy hikes or gentle jaunts over the hills, they’re easy to reach as the park is about a 30-minute drive from the northern end of the Lakes. It’s also a 25-minute walk to the small but perfectly formed village of Dalston if you’re not wanting to amble far for a supermarket and restaurants, and as the community’s a regular Cumbria in Bloom winner there are sure to be a fair few flower displays to ooh and ahh over… The village’s play areas and public swimming pool mean you might even be able to tempt kids along for a wander too – the river setting is excellent for rambling. The Cumbria Way ends at Carlisle and runs through Dalston, so you could join the 70-mile long-distance trail here (or just stop off for a stay at Camping at Cardewlees during an epic walk from one side to the other). Cycle paths are also strewn through the local landscapes for long or short rides. Before you head off for the day, fill up on breakfast prepped by the site’s owners; just check it’s available when you arrive. Amenities include a shower and regularly cleaned unisex toilets.

Skiddaw-view camping pod (two person)

Liked: I love being on a farm so this was perfect. Horses, cows, pigs and sheep and not many humans..my perfect getaway :-D Love the pods, single beds are big and the kitchenette is a great addition to my normal camping. The private garden to the pod was brilliant for my border collie. Thanks for a lovely few days camping at cardewlees :-)

Disliked: The weather but this is Britain after all, we still walked some of Hadrians wall as planned :-)

From the manager: You were a pleasure to host! Sorry about the weather, I will make sure to order some sunshine next time x

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Not much

Disliked: Facilities need updating & organised plots could of been assessed

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Our facilities are basic but always very clean. Our pricing structure reflects the fact that we don't have an all-singing, all-dancing toilet block. Our listing stipulates that we don't allocate pitches. We have never had any issues with this as the camping field is huge for the amount of pitches we offer.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful views. Large grassy field. Would be good for kids to play on. Fire pits provided.

Disliked: Rubbish around our site had not been cleared. Can’t check in till 3 and check out is 10 No walks from the site A walking route has been made to get towards the town but it is large hard core stones which are very difficult to walk on. One of the gates had something dumped beside it which smelled terrible. Its then a walk through an industrial estate.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I am unsure about what you mean about rubbish around the site. The pitches are checked daily, and my number is scattered around the site with a message asking you to call if you are unhappy with anything. Check in and out times are fairly standard and advertised on the listing, although you do have the option to add either an early check in or a late check out for a small fee if you so wish. The track from site takes about twenty minutes to complete which then finds you in Dalston Village where you can join the last part of the Cumbria Way or enjoy a walk round Dalston Green and the numerous other footpaths. You pass through an industrial estate for a few minutes before crossing the railway bridge.

From the manager: Pleased you can see the funny side 🤣 every year we talk about planting hedgerows to protect against the wind but then we worry that it will block the view. We can never decide what to do 🤣

Local attractions

If you’re keen on history, you could be learning about Carlisle’s in a jiffy – it’s a 15-minute drive from Camping at Cardewlees. The Great Border City also has a castle where Mary Queen of Scots spent a stint behind bars and a cathedral that was founded in 1133. For a flutter on the horses, a racecourse serves the local area too. To go further back in time – think close to 2,000 years – Hadrian’s Wall, the most visited Roman ruin in the whole of Britain, is a 40-minute drive from the site. The Walltown Crags section’s a stellar place to start your journey to a couple of millennia ago: this stretch of the original wall has eye-popping views over the patchwork of fields below. Not tired out after your epic journey along the Cumbria Way? Set off along the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path, which runs from one side of England's coast to the other.
