  • Top-notch Lake District caravan park in 130 acres of ancient forest
  • A 10-minute drive to Ambleside for Windermere boat trips
  • Dog-friendly park with woodland trails, tarn and large play area
If a trip to the Lake District National Park for you means plenty of peace, space and lovely natural views, this is the place for you. A couple of miles from Ambleside, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is set within 130 acres of ancient woodland, providing a top-notch location for a stay in this wonderful part of the world. This location is on the site of a former country house – and while that building is long gone, a few handy replacements have sprung up, including a reception building with a shop and several bathroom blocks with all mod cons (think underfloor heating and hot showers as well as accessible facilities and spacious family rooms). There’s also a building housing a well-equipped launderette (with several washing machines and tumble dryers, plus a drying room) and a library so you’ll have something to read while you wait for your clothes. That launderette may well come in useful, as this is a place that lends itself to getting just a bit mucky – for starters, there’s a fab four-acre open space for the kids to run about and play games, plus a large play area with a zipwire, scramble nets and loads of other play kit. There are also woodland trails running through the grounds, leading to the tarn and nature hide, with red squirrels, woodpeckers and deer to spot along the way. This is a large site, but it’s not a place that ever feels crowded, as pitches have been cleverly tucked away in tree-lined glades around the park, giving each area a cosy woodland atmosphere – just the thing for your peaceful Lake District break.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked .

Disliked The price was extortionate for what it was. Most expensive campsite I have stayed in and really not sure why you can justify the price.
Ques for the shower in the morning. Facilities we’re mediocre.
No flags or anything provided on your designated pitch if you are to be away for the day.

From the manager: Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re really sorry to hear that your stay didn’t meet expectations, especially as we aim to provide a relaxing and enjoyable experience for all our guests.

April is one of our busiest months, with the Easter holidays and bank holidays bringing a much higher number of visitors. While we do our best to manage this, we appreciate that this can sometimes lead to busier facilities during peak times. Our facility blocks are cleaned continuously throughout the day, one after the other, and during check-in we always let guests know if their nearest block may be temporarily closed for cleaning, as well as directing them to the next closest option.

Regarding pitch reservations, we do have reserved signs available, and these are mentioned at check-in for any guests who would like to use one while they are away from their pitch during the day. We’re sorry if this wasn’t clear at the time of your arrival.

We understand your concerns about pricing and always aim to reflect the quality of the site, facilities, and overall experience we offer, particularly during peak periods. That said, we truly value your feedback and will take it on board as we continue to improve.

Thank you again for your comments, and we do hope we might have the opportunity to welcome you back during a quieter period for a more relaxed stay.

Kind regards,
Lauren

Liked Beautiful grounds and facilities, generously sized pitches, outstanding customer service. We were in a roof top tent on our car. The team did say that they only stated to accept them last year but they couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful!

Disliked Nothing at all to dislike! We’d absolutely return!

Local attractions

As well as having top-notch facilities, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is in a top-notch location for a Lake District break. There are lots of great walks and activities nearby, and staff are always on hand to dish out ideas and tips to help you make the best of it all. Of course you’ll want to see some lakes – perhaps starting with Tarn Hows (15 minutes' drive) before moving on to a steam boat ride on Coniston Water (20 minutes) and a tour of Rydal Water (15 minutes), taking in Rydal Cave and Rydal Mount and Gardens along the way. The big one, of course, is Windermere, just a few minutes' drive from the park and with boat trips available from Ambleside (10 minutes). Around the lake there are various attractions to stop off at, including the National Trust sites at Wray (10 minutes) and Hill Top (20 minutes). If you've got the kids, look instead to places like the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (20 minutes) and Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (25 minutes).
