  • Up-cycled wooden huts at an animal sanctuary in Cuddington, Cheshire
  • Go Ape Delamere and Cheshire Falconry both 10 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-friendly site with a communal bar, outside kitchen and picnic area
When you’re looking to channel your inner Dr Doolittle, there’s nowhere better to stay than Parker’s Animal Sanctuary on the outskirts of Cuddington in Cheshire. With a brace of bijou, up-cycled wooden huts set by a burbling stream, the site is managed as a family-operated Community Interest Company, dedicated to rescuing and providing ‘forever homes’ for abandoned animals. This is a dog-friendly haven, so bring any four-legged chums from home to frolic with the Golden Retrievers and Labradors that roam freely around the grounds. Every booking contributes directly to the running of the sanctuary, ensuring food, bedding and veterinarian care for the animals. There’s a communal bar for thirsty (human) guests, and an outdoor kitchen where you can rustle up basic camping meals to eat at the picnic area on warmer days (if it rains, retreat to your cosy hideaway and play the board games provided). Should you need to stock up – or indeed fancy a night out –  there are pubs and shops in the centre of Cuddington (five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

The leafy paths of Delamere Forest (five minutes’ drive) are a handy spot for exercising yourselves (and any accompanying dogs), and you can also pedal along traffic-free bike tracks, go romping through the treetops at Go Ape Delamere (10 minutes) and help your kids follow the Gruffalo sculpture trail. At Marbury Country Park (20 minutes), take peaceful walks along the lime-tree avenue or have a dip in the outdoor swimming pool on warmer days. If you need more ideas to keep youngsters amused, book in advance for raptor flying displays at Vale Royal Falconry Centre, where the kids might like to meet and feed the eagle owls, or head to Cheshire Falconry (both 10 minutes) for a day of activities including handling the birds, trying archery and riding a Segway through woodland. Merseybeat fans can make the trip into Liverpool (about an hour) to join a Beatles Magical Mystery Tour of places once important to John, Paul, George and Ringo. Alternatively, enjoy a beer (or two) and live music in The Cavern pub, and take a selfie alongside the statue of The Beatles on the Pier Head.
