Liked: open space

Disliked: very basic toilets was down in the bushes in huts which isn’t ideal on a night wouldn’t pay £25 to stay there

From the manager: We are sorry that you felt that the back-to-basics camping experience we offer is... too basic. We're glad you enjoyed the open space we offer, though, and we are able to offer this by not having a toilet block every ten yards. Most campsites, in fact most tents, do not offer en suite toilet facilities, for obvious reasons. Having said this, our flushing, clean and dry toilets are adjacent to the camping field on a lit path, not 'in the bushes' as you seem to have experienced - perhaps you just went the wrong way. Perhaps you have enjoyed better toilet facilities at other campsites, but the very inexpensive prices we charge our campers unfortunately prohibit us from offering marble surfaces, a toilet attendant providing colognes and perfumes, or a teleport system so you can beam directly from your sleeping bag straight onto the bog.

Lovely, laidback site with a friendly welcoming atmosphere.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The laidback yet warm and welcoming atmosphere was lovely for our first time camping together! Fire pits were a fab addition (meaning that we didn’t need to take our own!). The bar was a fully functioning set up with contactless payment which was a bonus!

Disliked: The toilets are a little far if you’re going in the dark from the pitch but can cope with a torch!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Described as "Rural, back to basics camping in beautiful countryside." It was beyond basic, the facilities were dreadful. The field was party central with booming music from drunken groups.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We have fresh spring water, permanent toilets and portaloos. We have a snack bar serving hot and cold food, drinks and refreshments and a 17th-century style inn on site. Not to mention some of the most beautiful countryside and well-tended land in Yorkshire, including a nature reserve and a lake. That's pretty good facilities for a back-to-basics campsite, and certainly not 'dreadful' by mistake people's standards. There are plenty of friendly staff around if any campers are not behaving well (our policy is no amplified music or rowdy behaviour on the fields) that you can approach with any complaints.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loved everything. The site was super nice with a few different choices for where to pitch (they had a nice quiet field with more trees for example). The toilets were clean and the bar was really quirky and nice. Really great for my little boy and in a beautiful location. I will be returning for sure!

Local attractions

Cragg Vale, a 10-minute drive away, is a top spot to delve into local history and is crammed with independent shops for souvenirs and wallet emptying, from antiques and secondhand books to handmade quality crafts. There's more shopping, along with Victorian streets and a hillside setting, at Hebden Bridge (20 minutes' drive), frequently hailed as one of the best market towns in the UK and Europe. Check out the town events when you're here too, as Hebden Bridge is home to an acclaimed arts festival and the famed Handmade Parade. Hikers can ramble around all sorts of walking havens from here, with the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland both within an hour's drive for weeks' worth of contented tramping about. Or have a highly energetic time closer to home with a clamber up to Stoodley Pike, commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. There are splendid views of green countryside from here, so bring your camera. Brontë buffs might also want to check out the ruined farmhouse Top Withens (45 minutes), said to have been the inspiration for the Earnshaw home in Wuthering Heights. The surrounding moors are sure to have you searching for the nearest bookshop, or perhaps bawling out a certain Kate Bush song from the 70s…
