  • Spacious pitches in the grounds of a Northumberland village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from the A1 and east-coast beaches
  • Meals and drinks available Wednesday to Sunday; dogs and kids welcome
Plotting a stopover close to the A1, or perhaps in need of a nice rural spot to stay for a longer break spent exploring Northumberland’s countryside and coast? Either way, the pitches at the Railway Inn, on the edge of the village of Acklington, make a good pick – they’re spacious and set in two acres of tree-filled grounds for a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Various handy facilities are provided – including electric hookups, a wifi connection and a bathroom block with separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers – and it’s all less than 10 minutes’ drive from the A1. On top of all this, of course, there’s the huge bonus that you’ll be staying in the grounds of a pub – and a lovely traditional pub at that, in a restored building whose roots date back to the early 19th century. It’s open from noon from Wednesday to Sunday, serving up a tasty menu of pub meals and local ales either inside or out in the beer garden. Dogs and kids are welcome, and there’s a playground on site to entertain the latter. This is a handy spot for simply spending the night before returning to your journey north or south, but it also makes a great base for a longer break – the coast is about 10 minutes' drive away, and lots of excellent locations (including Alnwick, Bamburgh and Warkworth) are within easy reach.

What customers say

Friendly spot with lekker big pitches (especially right of the pub). Staff are tops – helpful & welcoming. The pub gets rave reviews for food & vibe, often with entertainment. Great base for exploring Northumberland. Downsides: toilets/showers are a bit old, sometimes not spotless or need updating. Trains and loud pub music were mentioned.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The location was close to my Aunt by in Morpeth who we were visiting as she was recovering from a stroke .

Disliked The train line was too close to campsite and made it impossible to sleep all night . The toilets were not clean when we arrived but cleaned shortly after and rained that way for the rest of our stay .
The owner of the site did not like us making a complaint and did not have a good manner with us .

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The food in the pub was good, but we weren’t made to feel welcome. The table was booked for 1 1/2 hours later and the landlord had to check it was ok for us to sit there yet a table that had a reserved sign on it was given to a regular with the landlord saying well fit you in

Disliked Pitches very close and cramped, poorly maintained, bins overflowing and untidy. Not a welcoming atmosphere.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Staff very friendly and the pub food was good.

Disliked Toilets and showers were disgustingly dirty and tatty. So much so that we couldn't find a shower clean enough to use. I would rate this site as being worth £20 for use of a pitch, not £35 for a pitch and use of showers and toilets. The site was crammed with campers so you would think they could afford a cleaner to maintain the showers and toilets.

Local attractions

Head east from the pub and you’ll hit the coast with a drive of 10 minutes or so. Once you’re there you can sign up for surf lessons in Amble, look out for birds at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre or wander through woods to hit the sand dunes at Druridge Bay Country Park. Looking a little further along the coast, there’s a nice long beach and a golf course in Warkworth (10 minutes' drive) and a couple of splendid seafront castles in Dunstanburgh (25 minutes) and Bamburgh (35 minutes). Holy Island (45 minutes) is another lovely place to visit, with lots of wildlife as well as an ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle – don’t forget, access is via a causeway that’s inaccessible at high tide. Away from the coast, you can take a tour of Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) – a particular treat for Harry Potter fans – or take the kids to meet the animals at Northumberland Zoo (15 minutes). National Trust - Cragside (25 minutes) is a nice place for a gentle wander; for something more challenging, head to the trails of Northumberland National Park (35 minutes).
