If your travels usually revolve around country walks from a well-equipped green base, you'll likely do well at Maustin Park in West Yorkshire’s Lower Wharfe Valley. At this large park in rural Yorkshire, head for a wander beside the river Wharfe (minutes away on foot), where birds can often be spotted in the trees and fishing can be done on the water. Rare red kites are often seen around the region. And if you're more of a browser than a birdwatcher or angler, Maustin Park is in the middle of the Yorkshire triangle of Harrogate, Leeds and York (20, 30 minutes and 45 minutes’ drive away respectively). Wetherby’s 15 minutes away and holds a town market every Thursday. Back at base, unwind in the reading lounge, have a snooker match in the dayroom or host a game on the bowling green. Delicious homemade food is available at the on-site Stables Bar and Restaurant, open from Wednesday through to Sunday (drinks only on Wednesdays, food served Thursday to Sunday), alongside a great selection of cask ales, wines and gins (it's a popular spot, so it's wise to reserve your table in advance). Handy amenities on site include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a laundry room, plus waste disposal and water taps.

Reception

  • Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.
  • The bar is open Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm to 10pm and Sunday 12pm to 7pm; food is served Thursday to Saturday from 5pm to 9pm and Sunday from 1pm to 6pm.

Liked Absolutely perfect. We stayed pitch 1 and we rented a pod (number 1).
Stayed with dogs. Walk directly from the park. River is near.
A really good campsite.

Liked The camping pods are lovely. Bigger than we expected. Plenty of room. The restaurant is superb. Food lovely and the waitresses very happy and friendly. Very peaceful location.

Disliked Toilet block could have been kept a little cleaner. Never really seemed ultra clean during our stay.

Liked Beautiful well tended site; friendly reception; clean facilities block with great shower; facilities all close to pitch; picnic table for every pitch; library and snooker table; great location and very, very peaceful. We visited on a night when the on-site bar and restaurant were not open, we don't therefore know if it gets busy/noisy on other days

Liked Brilliant site in the perfect location, staff friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this site and will book again if the opportunity arises. The onsite restaurant and bar is also worth a visit, the quality of the food is outstanding and they have dog friendly areas and go out of their way to make all their guests welcome.

Disliked Nothing to dislike no negative comments.

Once you’ve ticked off trips to the independent shops of Harrogate, the Jorvik Viking Centre in York and the Royal Armouries houses in Leeds, it’s easy to get deep into the countryside as it's about a 30-minute drive to the Yorkshire Dales National Park in one direction and 50 to the North York Moors National Park in another. To blend a bit of history into days out in scenic surrounds, well-preserved old manors with pristine gardens are all around, including Harewood House (10 minutes’ drive) and Ripley Castle (30 minutes). Soap opera fan? A visit to Harewood’s estate is also your chance to tour the studios and setting of Emmerdale (just make sure to book in advance).
