  • Family-run site with off-grid bell tents in a secluded setting
  • On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, 10 minutes' drive from Richmond
  • Barbecues and firepits on site
Set in a secluded and off-grid North Yorkshire setting within lush countryside just outside Hudswell and 10 minutes’ drive from the amenities of Richmond, My Happy Place is a retro-inspired glamping site that’s well and truly designed to add joy to jaunts away. It’s also created with comfort in mind: each of the tents at this family-friendly place has a double bed and two singles (all supplied with top-notch bedding). There’s also a woodburning stove inside to cosy up next to, as well as a barbecue for use out in the open. The site is on land farmed by the Graham family for four generations. The campsite has been open since 2014, always pulling out all of the stops to make it a friendly site with a family vibe. The facilities, which include a shower and toilet block, are kept very clean by Hannah and her team, who are are also on hand if guests have any problems or questions. As well as having no need to stock up on wood ahead of arrival, you can afford to travel light when staying at this park as lots of handy bits are already in place, including outdoor chairs and a picnic basket full of plates and cutlery. To mix things up when mealtimes roll around, wander 20 minutes to the nearest pub, which prides itself on its fine pies. There are lots of walks nearby in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a couple of minutes’ drive away, as well.

Local attractions

If you’re not sticking to the site for the whole of your trip, ramble around Richmond’s ancient castle and busy marketplace (10 minutes’ drive). The town also has a swimming pool, a golf course and a miniature golf course, as well as a riding school and cinema to busy yourself with. Not here for urban attractions? Head for Hudswell Woods (10 minutes), a place so pretty it’s protected by the National Trust, or flock to the family-friendly gardens at The Forbidden Corner (half an hour) to spy the unusual sculptures instead. The mile-long stretch of Aysgarth Falls (half an hour), a triple flight of waterfalls circled by woods and fields in the River Ure, is also worth a wander, as is The Big Sheep & Little Cow farm park (half an hour) if you’ve got nippers to amuse. And for grownup explores? Get a load of the ruins of Easby Abbey (15 minutes), reachable on a riverside roam from Richmond Castle, or crack on towards Catterick Racecourse (20 minutes) if you fancy a flutter.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Good location, nice and quiet

Disliked: No access to camping site by car, will have to carry everything by hand or available wheelbarrow, which means loads of trips back and forward, shower facilities were ok, only 1 toilet for the camping site which means you could be in a queue for a while.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lia is a fantastic host that makes you feel like a part of the family the moment you get there. Perfectly located close to things to do while still being in the middle of nowhere. I love that cars aren't allowed on the camping field so that you can let your children roam free from the park to the pond and spirit garden with no worries. You can feel the magic in the air here, it's fantastic! This feels like a second home to me and I've only been twice! We will never forget the time we have spent here.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very Friendly atmosphere and amazing, helpful and friendly host. Nothing was too much for her and made it all feel welcome. The campsite has everything you need from clean showers, toilets, play park for the children, and so much more. Excellent for stargazing too. Not too far from Richmond and other local attractions like The Forbidden Corner etc. so plenty to do. Local shop down the road to get essentials. Will definitely return. Thank you
