The Alders Caravan Park: Summertime at the site

General

  • Peaceful and spacious park in the Vale of York
  • Nine miles from York via the White Rose cycle route
  • A short stroll from the pub in the village of Alne

Picture yourself in a quintessentially English scene, basking with a drink to the pleasing thunk of leather hitting willow as you gaze out over the village cricket green, followed by a relaxing stroll through gorgeous sun-dappled woods and water meadows.

Should the above image capture your imagination, you'll likely approve of the setting of The Alders Caravan Park, on a working farm in the village of Alne and surrounded by North Yorkshire's gorgeous countryside. This place is a fab base for woodland walks and wildlife spotting… and of course the aforementioned cricket, which takes place on the village green a short walk away.

This peaceful and spacious park has been kitted out with excellent facilities, including two smart modern (and pleasingly warm) shower blocks, a roomy covered washing-up area and a launderette with washing machine, tumble dryer and iron to keep your clobber in good nick. Barbecues are welcome on site, and at their finest when accompanied by beef, lamb or free-range eggs from the site's farm shop.

Alders Caravan Park is an absolute gem. The site is very clean and well maintained, pitches are large and perfectly placed, our pitch had a lovely view over the countryside. The lady in reception was very helpful even giving us a carton of milk as their shop was closed for updating, we followed her cycle to our pitch with the facilities being pointed out along the way. The village is lovely with the local inn nearby, we only called in for a drink but there was a varied menu at reasonable prices. On the Saturday we cycled to Easingwold through quiet country roads and then watched cricket at the local cricket club which is on site, this site is one we definitely be visiting again.

That is wonderful to hear, many thanks for taking the time to leave such kind feedback.
We look forward to your next visit.

The campsite is set on a working farm and you drive through some of the pasture and past the barns to reach the site.
The owner and all the staff are extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Lots of space between vans and not set out in conventional rows but in semi-circles facing outwards.
Lovely toilet and shower blocks with private rooms containing loo, sink and shower. Plenty of room to put your things. The showers are very spacious too having double sized trays.
Very modern Elsan disposal with hand wash facility so very hygienic.
Bus to Thirsk or York and pub less than 10 mins walk. Pub serves good food and is very nice.
Peaceful setting with opportunities to view nature if you're lucky.
    Will definitely be back.

    Disliked:

A small improvement would be to pave the entrance to the toilet block all the way to the road. It's fine when dry but was a bit muddy when we stayed.
Water could have been hotter in showers.
I couldn't get on to the WiFi but not a big deal.

From the manager...

Thank you for this very thorough review and comments. We are delighted that you will visit again - it's the best endorsement we can get.

We will look to improve the run up to the paved bit of the path to the shower block. You make a great point and we will aim to fix at the end of the season.

Water temperatures are tricky...one person's luke warm is another's scald but we will go and check that it hasn't drifted away from the comfortable range most people love.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our site and I'm really pleased you enjoyed your stay.

I thought it was worth mentioning that we do have an eco-toliet right beside the Pods (hidden in the trees!), but in the current circumstances we felt the use of this did not sit comfortably within our Covid-19 safety measures and hence it is not available at the current time. With any luck, this will be back in use next year.
Best Wishes from all at the Alders.

Local attractions

In less than half an hour, guests will find all sorts of things to do: take to two wheels for a trip to York (nine miles down the White Rose Cycle Route), which is packed with brilliant stuff including the minster and Jorvik Viking Centre; steam through the North York Moors on a vintage train, or explore the wildlife and scenery of the Yorkshire Dales via Shanks' pony…

Holidaymakers can revisit Brideshead at Castle Howard palace and gardens, be transported back to the sights and sounds of World War Two at the Eden Camp Museum, and take in the grand National Trust mansions of Beningbrough Hall and Nunnington Hall, or the stunning walled gardens at Helmsley. If the kids start being beastly, you can always cart them off to the Flamingo Land zoo and theme park.

This being Yorkshire, you're never far from a bonny watering hole – and there are some cracking food pubs nearby, including Aldwark Arms at Aldwark and The Blue Bell in Alne. Visitors can also see how the local ales are made at the Black Sheep Brewery, which naturally offers lots of samples of its award-winning brews.
