  • Spacious adults-only Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
  • A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Eco-friendly site with a nature trail and nest box webcams
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutesā€™ drive down the roadā€¦ thereā€™s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed. And it has a good mix of rural views too ā€“ this is a site that has farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether youā€™re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way. Donā€™t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard and Scarborough. Being rather proud of their area, the owners here have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at whatā€™s rustling in the trees.

Mitchell's Field electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very new and clean well kept resort. Staff very friendly. 15 min drive away from the park and ride to get a bus into York to save on extortionate parking charges.

Disliked: The MOD barracks/training ground was less than a mile away, and unfortunately we have a very nervous dog and they were carrying out exercises with multiple loud noises throughout the day over the weekend we were there.

Mitchell's Field electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Everything. Upon entering the site, we were welcomed and introduced to the staff. Absolutely lovely people. Nothing was too much trouble. We were escorted to our pitch which was perfect. Level grass. Plenty of space between tents. The toilets and showers were immaculate. The dog walk around the site was lovely. As a couple who love nature, you could walk and just listen to the birds and no other sound. Perfect. Itā€™s located near a army training camp but apart from a couple of days for about an hour or so, it didnā€™t bother us and walking around that area, made me feel proud that my son trained to be a soldier and made me think of him. The bar is very welcoming and the pizza is beautiful. Well worth the money. York, Filey, Bridlington are a short drive away. Absolutely heaven. There is no shop onsite, but was informed a shop is in the process of building which you can see upon entering, and that should be open next year, but only a 5 minute drive to the local spar. Perfect

Disliked: Nothing

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice friendly welcome and very clear instructions when we got there. Good size pitches and a very clean site. The bathrooms were very well looked after and the on site bar and pizza truck were fab. It was the perfect site to then get a park and ride to York so all in all a great place to go. Appreciated the ways that this campsite is also doing what it can to be sustainable.

Disliked: There could have been pizza options for different dietary requirements; that said, they created a vegan pizza for us when we requested which was delicious! Also, they might like to think about supplying zero alcohol ipa/wines or botanical drinks. Maybe even a mocktail or two? These are very small things as the place was lovely but they might just add a little something else to the offering. Also we could not get WiFi at times which was trick when trying to plan for the following day.

Local attractions

Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). York (20 minutes) is a must, of course ā€“ for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes). There's a Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes) for an active day out. And thereā€™s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)ā€¦ Canā€™t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.
