  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs
Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab... Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely views and the toilets are clean and convenient. We only stayed 1 night so didn't use the showers but they looked clean too. It is my second time staying here and enjoyed it as I did the first.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Really well situated by a lovely river, great views and trains regularly passing by on the Settle-Carlisle line including steam trains. Flat pitches and soft ground, easy to pitch the tent.

Disliked: Facilities quite far away from one another e.g. toilets a fair trek from the showers and depending where you choose to pitch you could have quite a walk for the loo. Couldn't see a way of turning light on in toilets, not a problem and less disruptive to other campers with the light but remember a torch!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A lovely quiet site based in Horton in Ribblesdale. The site is about a mile from the village and there are a couple of nice walks to get there. In the village there are two pubs both serving food. The site is big so there is plenty of space to pitch up, lots of different little areas, so there is plenty of space between tents. The showers and toilets are basic, but clean and well maintained. Bring a torch as some of the toilets don’t have lights. A great place to stay if you are walking or wanting to explore the surrounding area.

Disliked: The only downside we found was the site was very boggy after a lot of rain, but this would probably be the same on any site, wouldn’t put us off coming again though.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your bucket list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
