  • Enclosed, sheltered site in an orchard opposite a Yorkshire Dales farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Reeth village and 35 minutes to Richmond
  • Sheltered pitches near the farm with views over the field
Looking out over green fields grazed on by sheep, and with River Swale walks right from the grounds – how smashing is Hazel Brow Farm Campsite for a serene stay? With just a handful of pitches, this site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park is also peaceful; situated in the valley bottom below the village, it's surrounded by calm countryside and just across the river from the Swale Trail walking and cycling route (bikes can be hired less than 10 minutes' drive away). If you’re planning to give your hiking boots a good workout, set forth on the site’s private footpath running down to the River Swale or climb the nearby hills through lush fields for memorable views over Swaledale. You could also stroll to the village of Gunnerside, a couple of miles west, for its traditional pub and a café – both serving food – or roam to Reeth, four miles to the east, again following the river. Set in a kind of natural amphitheatre, this settlement is where Swaledale meets up with Arkengarthdale and is known for having (yet more) excellent views. Facilities back at Hazel Brow include a toilet block and a mains water supply. The access lane is quite steep and narrow and, although there is flat space when you reach the bottom, it’s not accessible enough for large, A-class motorhomes – please bear this in mind when booking.

Liked: The peacefulness and tranquillity was restored this weekend which is why we consider Hazelbrow to be our favourite campsite, it had a very chilled vibe with serious campers who also enjoy the location and peaceful tranquillity of this lovely campsite

Disliked: Nothing, it was just how we found it on our first and many following visits

Field non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: We have stayed here quite a number of times and always had a great time and peaceful weekend

Disliked: It was not directly the owner's fault, but a group of lads staying at a house above the campsite were playing loud music and were very rowdy from 5pm until 4am along with another group of lads who were also sat talking till 4am on Sunday morning, we personally weren't disturbed by this when we went to sleep as we had earplugs, but people should be respectful of other people and understand why people go to such usually peaceful place.

From the manager: Firstly, thank you so much for leting me know about the problems this weekend. As you will know we've worked very hard to develop and maintain our reputation for a peaceful and quiet location. I was aware of the issue at the house. The people had been asked to turn the mucic down and as far as I was aware they had complied with the request. I wasn't aware the noise had continued later in the evening. I am sorry, I would have intervened further had I been aware. Our campsite rules state that our 'quiet time' extends from 8:00pm - 8:00am and we don't allow group bookings or music to be played onsite. This hopefully ensures the site remains a peaceful haven for our guests, our neigbours and our wildlife! Had I been aware of the noise on the campsite I would have intervened and enforced the rules. I am so sorry! I would ask and encourage anyone staying and aware of a problem to make a quick call or send a text message, regardless of the time of day/night so that issues or misunderstandings can be rectified immediately. We do try to take direct responsibility for the actions of our guests who are usually a very considerate bunch! Thank you so much for alerting us to this issue which we take very seriously and will endeavour to resolve. I hope this weekend hasn't put you off visitiing us in the future.

Field non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site and staff! 3 toilets. Lots of sheep, chickens and goats! Right by the river you can get down to and walk all the way along. Dog friendly. Walk to the pub around 30 mins max. Gorgeous views! A short drive to Reeth.

Disliked: No showers - we were not fussed as only staying 1 night but maybe not great for multiple nights stay! however it is a cheap site to stay at so this is reflected in the price

Liked: Beautiful location, surrounded rolling hills and a short walk to the river Swale. Clean toilets (shower not available) Very peaceful

Disliked: No Internet or mobile signal in the field camping area, however not sure this is a bad thing, as its a chance to enjoy each other's company and get away from the world. Internet is available near the main buildings.

From the manager: Thanks for reviewing us. Hope you enjoyed your 'downtime' from electronic communications! Some people manage to get 4G but it seems to depend on the phone/your network provider/the weather/where you're standing?!!? But yes, wifi available in and near the main farm buildings :-)

Route directions

Please drive carefully down the single track lane signposted 'Hazel Brow Farm'. It’s a tight left turn if you are approaching from the east, so it is easier to continue 600 metres to turn and approach from the west. Watch out for potholes. Keep left as you approach the cottages at the bottom. Drive on the tracks until you reach the farm gate. The field is directly ahead. Follow the tracks through the gate next to the tree slightly to your right. The farm site and check-in point is on your left.

Local attractions

Roam around Richmond (35 minutes’ drive away) to investigate the ruins of Easby Abbey, along with a Norman-era castle and the Green Howards Regimental Museum – or splurge on locally-produced snacks at the cobbled market square for snacks while walking through nearby woodland. If that whets your appetite for more artisan treats, aim for the Wensleydale Creamery (35 minutes), where you can learn about the history of Yorkshire cheese and, more importantly, pick up masses of the stuff to gorge on. When you’re full to the brim with dairy products, another wander’s in order to work it all off – amble to a waterfall such as Aysgarth Falls (half an hour), then move over to the Aysgarth Edwardian Rock Garden close by for – you guessed it – a little look at an Edwardian rock garden. If inclement weather is making outdoor expeditions too tricky, find shelter in the 14th-century ramparts of Bolton Castle (25 minutes).
