  • Pop-up site in 80 acres of parkland in the village of Rillington
  • Onsite catering unit and weekend entertainment with licensed bar
  • Flamingo Land, Pickering and the coast within a half-hour drive
Settle in for busy breaks at Scampston Hall, a large family-friendly site in the Yorkshire village of Rillington, 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Malton. Scampston Hall covers 80 acres of some of the finest parkland in North Yorkshire, so guests here will have plenty of space to relax, and a rather smart backdrop of stately home, lake and woodland while they do so. This is an excellent base from which to explore Yorkshire’s wolds, moors and coastline, but it's worth planning to spend some time on site too, as the location is part of the Yorkshire Traction Engine Rally – held on 2 and 3 September 2023 – with tickets included (should your stay with the site coincide) as part of the camping fee. The rally hosts a vast array of traction engines and vintage vehicles, trade stands, a craft and fine food marquee, vintage fairground, plus various main arena attractions. There will also be a stage show with various dancing and singing acts, a licensed bar and various catering units in operation from Friday evening until 5pm on Sunday. Want to do your own barbecue? There is a shop and butchers within walking distance in Rillington, or it's a short drive to an award-winning farm shop.

Local attractions

Want to go for a walk? The Wolds Way long-distance walking route can be joined five minutes’ drive from the site, the Cleveland Way coastal path is half an hour away and, if that’s not enough hiking, the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the North York Moors National Park are both within 20 minutes. For a scenic breather, head to Pickering (15 minutes' drive) to pick up the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. If spending some time around animals holds more appeal, try Piglets Adventure Farm (20 minutes) or the zoo (and theme park) at Flamingo Land Resort (15 minutes). Active times might take you to Dalby Forest (20 minutes) for walks and Go Ape adventures, or to bound across the inflatables at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes). Seaside days come highly recommended hereabouts, as the coast is just half an hour from base. Zip along to Filey for sandy beach days and poking around museums, or try Scarborough for all that plus a castle, gardens, an aquarium, a waterpark and a casino. Not enough urban time? Head to York, 40 minutes away, to shop at the famed Shambles, explore the museums, traipse through the dungeons, scramble over the city walls and feel awed in York Minster. More local history can be explored at Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum (10 minutes) or smart Castle Howard (20 minutes).

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Spacious field to choose a pitch and level. Allowed bbqs. Plenty of port a loos.

Disliked: The bouncy castle was expensive if you have a few children. £3 for 10mins. The evening entertainment wasn't catered at all for children, 3 ladies singing war songs.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Plenty of space to pitch up whether it was one tent or a group. Lots of clean toilets that were regularly emptied. Food van, coffee and cake stall and bar were a really good addition. Entertainment in the tent on a night was great. Bouncy castles for kids/big kids

Disliked: People driving around on a quad for what seemed like no particular reason. No showers, which isn’t a major issue for a couple of nights.

Facilities adequate (could be a LOT better), prices extortionate.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Generous pitch size.

Disliked: No pot washing facilities - just a tap over muddy ground. Whilst we knew in advance there were no showers, we can’t work out why?? It seems senseless when money was being spent on entertainment each night - get the basics right first! The portaloo’s were clean and respectable when we arrived on the Friday, but by the bank holiday Monday morning it was a struggle to find one you’d be happy to frequent. Prices of the children’s entertainment (bouncy castle) was unnecessarily extortionate - yes we paid it, but felt cheated. The back to back nature of the pitches ( it was like a row up on row of terraced caravans) is not our idea of camping, it really was a huge site. Needed liquid soap in the bathrooms (this isn’t exactly a budget camping site!), the provision of communal tablet soap in the portaloos isn’t good enough!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This site has been well thought out. Theres Good solid ground, so even though it rained all weekend, it wasn’t like a bog! Clean porta loos, and grey waste disposal if needed. Fresh water points around the site. Bar and food van they’re great for chips on and night, and bacon butty on a morning. Oh and a milk man going round on a morning too, selling fresh orange as well as milk.

Disliked: It was quite expensive for what it was.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Absolutly loved it... there was inflatables for the kids that kept them entertained throughout the day... the food trucks were spot on and could not fault the entertainment at night. Will be coming back in the near future.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful location with loads of space to pitch where we wanted. Scampston Hall Gardens worth a visit. Enjoyed a Sunday lunch at the Coach and Horses which we walked too. Food onsite was good. A bonus to have live music each evening.

Disliked: Portaloos meant you couldn't get a proper wash but this was made clear when booking.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great facilities. Stayed August bank holiday weekend. Beer tent, inflatable for the kids, fish and chip van and live music. Lovely atmosphere. Portaloo’s remained clean and usable.

Disliked: Nothing.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great site especially considering it’s pop-up nature.

Disliked: No showers available on site however this was clearly stated and brought to campers attention prior to visiting. We were pitched next to the pond/lake so struggled a little with insects (despite having control measures in place) and the trees next to our end pitch blocked nearly all sunshine. Just unlucky on the pitch number I guess!
