  • Hamsterley Forest 20 minutes’ drive; Durham 35 minutes
  • Firepit, fully equipped kitchen and ensuite shower room
For a taste of a simpler life (but not so simple that you’d have to forgo any luxuries, of course…), you can take yourself on a glamping break to Woodcroft Farm, a five-minute drive from the County Durham villages of Frosterley and Stanhope, in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. At this traditional hill livestock farm (run by the same family since 1947), you’ll be staying in a luxury cabin with a blond-wood interior that gives it a modern and clean Scandinavian vibe. Cosy and cleverly designed, the accommodation has a comfy bed and ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower and heated towel rail. (By the way, there’s no need to weigh yourself down with bed linen and towels either, as you can hire them on site.) The kitchenette comes with all you might need to keep your family fed. Alternatively, you can start the firepit (provided) and devour your meals alfresco. Having said that, though, you’re meant to be on holiday, right? So you might just want to hit one of several local pubs for a home-made meal. The site owners will be happy to help with suggestions on the best walks, starting with the Weardale Way, which passes right through the farm. Or you can drive to Slitt Wood (15 minutes’ drive), a former mining area that’s now been given over to nature, with small waterfalls and wooded trails where you might spot redstarts and dippers. For those who are into angling, the site has its own stretch of private fishing on the River Wear (a licence is required), and there are also several well-stocked lakes in the vicinity, such as Derwent Reservoir Fisheries (20 minutes).

Elder camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Rural farm location, beautiful scenery. Private parking near to cabins. Cute, clean, equipped accommodation. Local info helpful. Wi-fi. No TV but you really appreciate the scenery, walks, peace and sheep.

Disliked: As an older couple we found the bed a bit of a challenge.

Oak camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Great location with a nice walk in either direction to a village with pub, shop and chippy. Excellent cabin which was well furnished and spotless. Really good shower in the en-suite. Kitchenette had everything needed and there was an option for an outdoor fire pit offered at a small charge. Outdoor area perfectly laid out with picnic table and chairs. Nice and secluded with a wonderful view. Excellent secure parking. Lovely welcome on arrival and great information pack detailing local walks and amenities. Wi-Fi not really used but good mobile reception.

Disliked: A lamp would be useful rather than main ceiling lights in an evening.

Oak camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Only 3 huts so would never busy. Huts slightly angled so privacy from each one. Seemed insulated as heard no noise. Great electric shower. Great amenities. WiFi and TV, if needed. Owners in nearby farm incase needed. Great secure parking. Stunning views. Plenty of walks or country attractions a short drive including villages with shops pubs takeaways etc. 2 outside chairs plus 6 seater bench and fireput bbq. Could not fault a thing.

Disliked: Nothing.

Elder camping pod (no pets)

Liked: A peaceful setting with beautiful views down the valley. The three pods are well spaced out and angled for privacy with planting either side helping that further. Appreciated the noise reduction rules that apply to maintain the sense of tranquility for all. Well equipped pod with all you could need in terms of kitchen equipment, bedding, towels etc. Immaculately clean inside.

Disliked: I understand why, but the mattresses on the beds were quite thin making it a very hard to sleep. Would be handy to have soap provided in the bathroom. This isn’t something that folk tend to bring with them. No comfortable seating in the pod if the weather isn’t great and you’re stuck inside watching the television. The curvature of the walls due to the design of the pod is the limiting factor here which I appreciate.

Hazel camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: We had a lovely stay here. The setting is beautiful, very peaceful and Sarah was super helpful when we requested some logs for the fire pit. The kids loved the swingball and also the DVDs were a great touch for bedtime!! The private bit of river was great for tossing stones and we had it all to ourselves. We would definitely recommend. Thanks for a fab stay!

Oak camping pod (no pets)

Liked: The location was great for the children, they enjoyed wandering and exploring in the wood as the area was extremely safe, except for the nettles! Sarah our host was lovely, friendly and very helpful and the cabin was cosy and had everything you need.

Disliked: We brought bedding, but not quilts. Just the bedding and the children fortunately brought their own pillows

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comment regarding bedding. We have made a slight modification to the listing description to hopefully avoid any future confusion. Bedding is an added extra and is priced per double bed. The hire includes duvets, pillows, covers, towels and bath mat. We do not offer the hire of duvets and pillows on their own. It's all or nothing, as some guests prefer to bring their own pillows and sleeping bags.

Local attractions

If you’re itching to hurl yourself down a hill on your mountain bike, Hamsterley Forest (20 minutes’ drive) is the place to go and get muddy. There are routes for most abilities here, from (relatively) gentle off-road tracks for less experienced riders to technically demanding black trails. The North Pennines have dark sky status, and you can make the most of the night sky at Grassholme Observatory (half an hour). This facility on the banks of Grassholme Reservoir holds regular events that start with an informative talk and conclude with a look through powerful telescopes. Stretching along the River Wear, the university city of Durham (35 minutes) is known for its medieval cathedral, home to splendid stained-glass windows and Harry Potter filming locations. For a breather with a scenic view of the cathedral, head to Crook Hall Gardens.
